About JEE Main 2018

JEE Main 2018 (Joint Entrance Examination) applications process will start from 1 December 2017 and is conducted by CBSE for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programmes in NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), participating State Government Institutions, and several other Institutions shall accept the JEE Main 2018 Score. It is also a qualifying exam for admission in IITs via JEE Advanced. JEE Main Score is also accepted by a lot of other government and private engineering colleges and hence is a very important exam.

The exam will be conducted in both computer-based mode and offline mode for Paper 1 and only offline mode for Paper 2.

JEE Main 2018 Exam Date: Pen and Paper based test will be conducted in 1st week of April 2018. JEE Main Computer Based Test will be held in the 2nd week of April 2018 from 0930-1230 Hours(IST) and 1400-1700 Hours (IST) - if required.

From 2017 Onwards, Class 12 Marks will not be included in calculating the JEE Main Rank 2018. The candidates who wish to take admission in IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs where students are admitted on the basis of JEE Ranks must secure a minimum of 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST).       • Top 2,40,000 candidates of JEE Main are eligible to appear JEE Advanced, which the candidate has to take if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs/ ISM Dhanbad.
      • Last year, over 13 lakh candidates appeared for this national level exam for admissions to 31 NITs, 18 IIITs and 18 GFTIs, which are the participating institutes of JEE Main
      • JEE Main Exam is for both Engineering and Architecture Aspirants.

CBSE will be conducting the JEE Main Exam in 1st week of April 2018, in the offline mode. It is compulsory to fill Aadhaar Number to fill JEE Main Application form from this year. Many private engineering colleges have also stopped conducting their exam and have started accepting the score of JEE Main for admission. So any student who is an engineering or architecture aspirant should appear in the JEE Main Exam.

JEE Main 2018 Eligibility criteria


There is an age criterion applicable for the aspiring candidates of JEE Main 2018 listed below in the table. There will be a  relaxation of 5 years for the students belonging to SC/ST/PwD categories only candidates following the given below age eligibility will be considered eligible.

  • ST, SC, PWD Candidates

Born on or After October 1, 1989

Passing year of Qualifying Exam

  • Passed Class 12: Candidates who have passed their class 12 exam or any other equivalent qualifying exam in 2016 or 2017 can apply for the entrance test.

  • Appearing in Class 12: Candidates who are appearing in their Class 12 Exam or any other equivalent qualifying examination in 2018 will be considered eligible to appear in JEE Main 2018.

Non-Eligible candidates in JEE Main 2018

  • Those students who have passed Class 12/Qualifying examination in 2015 or before as well as those who will appear in the same in the examination in 2018.

  • Those students who have appeared in Class 12/Equivalent Qualifying Examinations in 2015 and failed, but appeared again and passed in 2016 will be considered Non-Eligible appear in JEE Main 2018.

  • If a candidate expects the result of Class 12/Equivalent Qualifying Examination to be declared ofter June 15, 2018, by the examining body, the candidate is advised not to attempt JEE Main 2018.
  • Candidates whose result of Class 12 /equivalent qualifying examination is not available by June 15, 2018, will not be considered for allotment of All India Ranking of JEE Main 2018. 

Number of subjects in the Qualifying Examination

Candidates must have taken at least five subjects in class 12 or qualifying examination to be eligible for writing JEE Main 2018. The candidates who have taken four subjects are not permitted for JEE Main 2018.

Maximum Number of Attempts 

The candidate has maximum 3 number of attempts to appear in JEE Main Examination. However, it is advised to cross-check each and every eligibility parameter before filling the application form.Maximum Attempts and Age Limit for the State of Odisha and Madhya Pradesh

The number of attempts, age limit, for admission to institutions in these states which were earlier admitting candidates based on their state level examinations, will be as per their past practice only, however, be obviously not applicable for admission to IITs /NITs /IIITs /CFTIs

JEE Main 2018 Result and Counselling

JEE Main 2018 Result of Paper 1 for all candidates will be declared by Last Week of April 2018.The score shall comprise the actual marks obtained in JEE Main 2018 Paper 1 along with the status of those who qualify for appearing in JEE Advanced 2018.

  • Separate rank lists will be prepared for admission to B.E./B. Tech. and B. Arch/ B. Planning (in institutions other than IITs).
  • JEE Main 2018 Rank Lists will be declared on or before Last week of June 2018.

JEE Main for admission in  NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, Participating institutes and States will be based on JEE Main 2018 Score.For admission to NITs, Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) like IIITs, etc. and other participating Institutions, the merit/rank list shall be prepared based on JEE Main Score.

  • JEE Main 2018 Rank Card indicating All India Rank, State Rank and Category Rank with total marks and marks in each paper will be available on JEE (Main) website after the declaration of result.Only the All India Rank (AIR) is used for admissions through Central Seat Allocation Board to NITs / IIITs / CFTIs / SFIs /Others, while other ranks are for information purposes

JEE Advanced 2018

The candidates who qualify JEE Main 2018 and are declared eligible for JEE Advanced 2018 will have to register again for JEE Advanced 2018 after the declaration of the JEE Main 2018 score.

  • Admission to IIT- It is compulsory for students to appear in both JEE Main & JEE Advanced 2018 to be eligible for admission to IITs & ISM Dhanbad.

JEE Advanced Qualifying Criteria has changed for appearing in JEE Advanced 2018. Students can either be among the top 20 percentile or should have secured minimum 75% marks in the qualifying exam

JEE Main 2018 Exam pattern

Question Paper Medium of JEE Main 2018: English / Hindi / Gujarati. The Question paper will be available in English and Hindi in all centres except Gujarat, Daman and Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli where the Exam will be conducted in Gujarati as well. 

JEE Main 2018 shall have two papers:

  • Paper-1 (B. E. /B. Tech.) and Paper- 2 (B. Arch. / B. Planning)
  • Depending upon the course(s) candidates are seeking admission, they may take Paper-1 (B. E. /B. Tech.), or Paper-2 (B. Arch. /B. Planning.), or both.

Udaan program is an initiative by CBSE to provide free engineering entrance exams preparation for girls in India.  Total 1000 girl students will be selected to attend the online tutorial classes for preparation of JEE Main & JEE Advanced for IIT including lectures and study materials. JEE main cut-off is the minimum score required by the candidates to get admission in the top engineering colleges in the country. JEE Main answer keys and OMR images (OMR sheets) of both the Pen & Paper Based as well as examination and Computer Based Examination will be displayed on the website. The candidates will have the option to challenge the answer keys; the candidates can follow the given link to get details on JEE Main answer keys.  The answer keys give a fair idea to the candidates about their performance in the exam, and JEE Main Result would be based on the JEE main final answer keys. If the candidate challenges any answer released by CBSE and is found to be correct then, due consideration will be made for that.

JoSAA counselling is conducted by Joint Admission Board (JAB 2018). Only those candidates who have secured JEE Main rank in Paper 1 and those who have qualified in JEE Advanced are eligible for JoSAA counselling. JoSAA is conducted for admission to IITs, ISM Dhanbad, IIEST Shibpur, NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and GFTIs. JoSAA 2018

JEE Main 2018 Participating States & Colleges

A total of seven states have joined JEE Main system and will accept JEE Main 2018 score. State level Engineering Entrance Exam will not be conducted in these states.

These states were earlier admitting students based on their State Level Entrance Examination. Therefore, the candidates seeking admission to the institutions in these states are also advised to fill JEE Main Application Form 2018. States that would be taking JEE Main 2018 score for admission are:

From 2018 onwards the medium of exam will be English, Hindi and Gujarati. Till last year JEE Main was conducted in five languages, including Marathi and Urdu. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Nagaland & Odisha have joined JEE Main and will not be conducting their state level engineering entrance exam. These states will conduct their counselling for filling the engineering seats.
