About Green Olympiad

GREEN Olympiad is a written examination on Environment for school students organised by TERI. Green Olympiad was initiated by TERI in the year 1999 and in 2012, more than two lakh students have participated in Green Olympiad examination.Green Olympiad has a support and Endorsement from the following organisations

  • Green Olympiad is supported by the CBSE as a part of its Environment Awareness component of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation- CCE Scheme.
  • UNESCO and DESD (Decade of Education for Sustainable Development) has endorsed GREEN Olympiad since 2011.
  • Constant support from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, since 1999. 
  • GREEN Olympiad is conducted by Educating Youth for Sustainable Development Division of TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute

Green Olympiad 2017 Theme and Exam Details

  • The theme of Green Olympiad 2017 examination is “Environment and Sustainable Development”.
  • Green Olympiad 2017 will be conducted on 13 September 2017 and 25 October 2017 (10:00 am to 11:00 am) and will be held in the respective school premises. 
  • Green Olympiad exam will be conducted on the above-given dates and the schools are allowed to choose any one.
  • Green Olympiad will be conducted on three levels that are Level 1, 2 and 3 and will be conducted in two languages that are English and Hindi.

Green Olympiad Eligibility Criteria

  • Only school students from class 4-10 can participate in Green Olympiad.
  • Both national and international schools can apply for the Green Olympiad examination by filling the entry form.
  • The students can participate only through school and no Individual registrations will be accepted.
  • Every school has to nominate at least 20 students.
  • The number of participating students from every school can be more.
  • The Green Olympiad examination is open only for schools affiliated to recognised education boards and educational trusts. 
  • Green Olympiad has seen participation from the following Countries in the past.
    • Bhutan
    • India
    • Indonesia
    • Iran
    • Japan
    • Kenya
    • Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
    • Kuwait
    • Nepal
    • Singapore
    • The State of Qatar
    • Sultanate of Oman
    • The United Arab Emirates

Green Olympiad Reward

  • Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) will award 'Certificates of Participation' to all students who participate in the GREEN Olympiad.
  • Merit and Distinction certificates are also given to top performers. There is also a cash award for the state toppers.
  • The top 32 performing schools of the GREEN Olympiad are selected to participate in the TERRAQUIZ


  • The GREEN Olympiad finally culminates into TERRAQUIZ, the first environmental quiz programme for school students.
  • TERRAQUIZ is a 13-episode quiz programme based on topics of daily concern, local as well as global.
  • Each year, seven teams from each of the four zones and four teams from outside India are selected to participate in TERRAQUIZ.
  • It is an interactive quiz and the rounds are designed on the lines of a game show. Attractive audio-visuals impart a unique flavour.

How does one qualify for TERRAQUIZ?

When the GREEN Olympiad examination is over, the results are collated and 64 students from the top-performing 32 schools are invited to participate in TERRAQUIZ. 7 teams are selected from each zone in India and four from the International Group.

What is the visibility of TERRAQUIZ?

  • TERRAQUIZ has been telecasted on a popular television channel, every year.
  • Until 2007, Doordarshan helped in making TERRAQUIZ immensely popular among the young minds across the Country. From 2008- 2011, the Quiz was aired on National Geographic Channel. From 2011, the programme is being aired on the Discovery Channel, Discovery Science, Discovery Channel (Tamil) 
  • All 32 teams who participate in TERRAQUIZ receive attractive prizes. 
  • The winners of TERRAQUIZ are declared the 'Green Hero Ambassadors'
  • Schools of the participating teams are also recognised and awarded for their performance

Green Olympiad Application form and Process

The student has to Register for Green Olympiad 2017 through their school and no individual registration would be accepted.

Registration Fees for Green Olympiad 2017

The registration fees for Green Olympiad is as follows

  • International student is $5 for every student
  • National students is Rs 75 for every student

The school has to download the application form and send the filled in application form along with a list of participants and bank draft in the favour of TERI, payable at New Delhi,

Green Olympiad Selection Process

Green Olympiad will be conducted in three levels according to the different classes of the students. They are given below:

  • Level 1- students from classes 4 and 5
  • Level 2- students from classes 6, 7 and 8
  • Level 3- students from classes 9 and 10

How to Prepare for Green Olympiad 2017?

Read: To prepare for Green Olympiad the students should read as many articles as they can on environmental issues in magazines, newspapers, books, journals, encyclopaedias.

Watch Informative TV Channels: The students can watch channels such as Discovery, Animal Planet, National Geographic, etc., on television.

Study Material for Green Olympiad 2017

The students can order a copy of 'Enviro-Challenge': a well-researched question bank containing over 500 questions on diverse topics on the environment for the preparation of Green Olympiad and Terra Quiz.

Green Olympiad 2017 Exam Pattern

  • It will be multiple choice questions Exam containing 100 questions.
  • It can be taken in Hindi or English Language
  • It will be a 2 hours examination and will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Green Olympiad Result 2017

The scores of the answers given will be calculated to tabulate results.Complete mark and rank list will be sent to the schools or can be accessed on the official website of TERI. The green olympiad result is declared in two parts - Result for Indian Schools and Result for International Schools. The candidate can check the result by entering their School Code or their Roll Number.
