About International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO 2018)

12th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO): The registration for 12th International Mathematics Olympiad is open now. The last date to apply for the same is 31 August 2018. International Mathematics Olympiad is commonly known as IMO. The registration is only possible through school. It is a multi-level exam. IMO Level 1 exam will be conducted on three dates in 2018. The candidates from class 1 to 12 are only eligible to register for IMO. However, for IMO Level 2, only the qualified students from class 3 to 12 are eligible to participate. A minimum of 10 candidates is required from a school to register. IMO is organised by Science Olympiad Foundation, which is a Non-Profit organisation. International Mathematics Olympiad - IMO 2018

The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) is an educational foundation and a non-profit organisation, based in New Delhi (India), which promotes Science, Introductory Computer Education, Mathematics and English in India and other places like Singapore, Oman, Qatar, Nepal,  Bahrain, SriLanka, U.A.E. and
 Durban. 

  • IMO (International Mathematics Olympiad) is conducted by SOF and is a means to identify and encourage the mathematical creativity of children in schools across India and abroad.
  • All students participating in IMO (1st level) get a Math Quotient (MQ), giving their Score, School Rank, City Rank, State Rank, International Rank, and Percentile, as well as a Certificate of Participation
  • SOF also generates a performance report for all participating schools known as School Mathematics Quotient.
  • IMO Exam date 2018: IMO 2018 first level of examination will be conducted on two dates that are 4, 13 & 18 December 2018 as per the convenience of the School

What are the two IMOs and how are they different from each other?

  • IMO at India Level: IMO is conducted by SOF and it ends at India Level, the details of the Olympiad is given on this page. 
  • International IMO: But, If you are really a superb student of Mathematics then you should take Regional Mathematical Olympiad and on qualifying that you will be eligible to take Indian National Mathematics Olympiad and finally 6 students will be selected and they will represent India in 59th IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) at Cluj-Napoca, Romania. These students are trained by Indian Statistical Institute. This olympiad witnesses participation from more than 100 countries.

18th IMO 1st Level Exam Awards

  • Gold Medal: Gold medal and Merit Certificates will be given to top ten rank holders from each class.
  • These awards will be given to the winners from 20 Zones/States for their performance in the 1st level Olympiads.

Important note related to the 18th IMO 1st level Awards:

  • Only one award will be given to each winner.
  • Therefore, top 3 rank holders will get the awards based on their International ranks.
  • The award for them in the state ranks will be offered to the next rank holder.

International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO 2018) Application form and Process

SOF International Mathematics Olympiad registration form is available below. However, the candidates can only apply for SOF IMO through school. The school needs to register first to conduct SOF IMO.   • The event is open to the students of classes 1 to 12 and registrations are received from the schools in the prescribed proforma.
  • Registration sheet for the school/students and the information booklet are posted to the schools all over India and abroad. 
  • The school's coordinating teacher will be generating the students' Roll Numbers as per the guidelines.
  • A copy of these roll numbers along with the students' registration and school registration sheet should be sent to the Foundation's office before 31 August 2018

International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO 2018) Selection Process

  • Selection of the student would be done on the basis of the exam.
  • Results of both the levels of IMO are declared within 6 weeks of the examination.
    • The results are sent to the schools concerned.
    • The results are also made available on SOF's website. 

IMO Syllabus for Class 1-12

International Mathematics Olympiad is conducted in 2 levels

Level 1: The 1st level is organised in the Schools of the participants during the school hours.

  • It is a 60 min objective type exam comprising of 35 and 50 questions for class 1-4 and class 5-12 respectively.
  • The test will be in English language and will consist of following sections:
    • Mathematical ability
    • Logical and analytical reasoning
    • Everyday Mathematics
  • Each section will be accorded separate weightage.
  • CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Board syllabus is followed for setting the test papers.
  • Exam Dates: 4, 13 and 18 December 2018, as per the dates chosen by schools.

Level 2:
 The qualifiers to the second round would include the following:

  • Top 5% of candidates class wise who has appeared for the 1st level exam.
  • Top 25 rank holders class wise & Zone wise.
  • Class topper where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & scores 50% qualifying marks.

Exam Dates: 2nd level exam will be held on 2nd or 3rd Sunday of Feb 2019. 

International Mathematics Olympiad Previous Exam Papers

The candidates can download International Mathematics Olympiad previous exam papers from the official site of SOF. The previous exam papers of SOF International Mathematics Olympiad can be downloaded after the payment of the required amount. Candidates can use the previous year papers to prepare for the International Olympiad of Mathematics. Candidates can practice the International Mathematics Olympiad questions of previous years in it and work on improving their weak areas.
Practising for International Olympiad of Mathematics through such previous year papers gives the student a boost in the confidence and she/he is able to perform better in the actual test.

IMO Answer Key 2018

An Answer key is a simple list of all the correct answers and it is released by SOF for IMO so that the candidates can compare their answers with it and estimate the number of marks they are going to score in IMO 2018. IMO Answer Key 2018 will be released in December 2018 by SOF. The IMO Answer Key 2018 will be available for all the three sets and for all the classes from 1 to 12.

IMO Result 2018

The candidates who participated in level 1 of IMO 2018 will have to score above or equal to cut off marks to qualify for level 2 exam of IMO 2018. IMO Result 2018 is declared separately for each level and is usually declared within the 8 week of the examination. Candidates will have to enter the allotted Roll number for IMO 2018 along with School code and Class number to check IMO Result 2018. The student who participated in IMO 2018 is also given a Student Performance Report which is an analysis of his/her performance in the exam.

IMO Ranking Criteria

In the case of level one exam, the following criteria will apply

  • Marks obtained in relevant level
  • Marks obtained in sections of the relevant level. Each section is accorded separate weightage.
  • In the first level exam, one rank may have more than one student.

 In the case of level 2, the following criteria will apply

  • Marks scored in level 2 exams.
  • In a case of a tie, weightage will be accorded as per the following priority:
  • Marks scored in sections in level two exam accorded more weightage.
  • Marks scored in level 1 exam.
  • Marks scored in sections in level one exam accorded more weightage.
  • Past performance of the student.
  • Interview conducted by SOF.
  • In level two, no two students will be given the same rank.

IMO 2018 FAQs


Question 1: What is the benefit of attempting IMO 2018?
After giving level 1 exam, the individual will be able to analyze his/her academic performance at four different levels i.e. within the school, at the city level, at a zonal level and the International Level. A Student Performance Report (SPR) is also provided to students for an easy analysis of his/her performance.

Question 2: Do the students have to prepare from special books for IMO 2018?
A student willing to participate in IMO 2018 can prepare using NCERT books/course books prescribed by the CBSE/ICSE/STATE BOARDS. SOF also has its own books to prepare for IMO 2018 that the student can buy from the link given in the official website of SOF.

Question 3: Is individual participation allowed?
No, candidates cannot participate individually and will be able to participate through their schools only.

Question 4: Can a student register for IMO 2018 after the school has sent all the form for participation?
Yes, the student can register for IMO 2018 by requesting his/her school authorities to send the relevant details and fees before the last date which is usually 30 days before the exam.

Question 5: How will the candidates who passed the exam and are eligible for the award who has changed/passed out of the school know about the IMO Result 2018 and receive the award?
All the information of the date and venue of the presentation ceremony shall be sent to the concerned school and will also put the dates on the official website of SOF.

Question 6: What to do if a candidate has not received Admit Card / Roll number / Participation Certificate?
In such case, the candidate is suggested to request the teacher/principal to inform SOF about the non-receipt of the above-mentioned documents and duplicate copies of the required document will be sent by SOF.
