About National Science Olympiad

21st National Science Olympiad (NSO) 2018: The registration for 21st National Science Olympiad 2018 has started. The candidates can apply through their registered school only. National Science Olympiad is conducted by Science Olympiad Foundation which is a non-profit organisation. National Science Olympiad is a multi-level Olympiad. NSO Level 1 exam will be conducted on various dates. The candidates from class 1 to 12 are eligible to apply for NSO Level 1 exam whereas, the NSO Level 1 qualified students from class 3 to 12 are only eligible to appear in NSO Level 2 Exam. National Science Olympiad (NSO) 2018

National Science Olympiad is one of the most prestigious science olympiads in Asia. It gives the Science Quotient (SQ), giving their Score, School Rank, City Rank, State Rank, International Rank, and Percentile, as well as a Certificate of Participation.SOF also generates a performance report for all participating schools, known as School Science Quotient (SSQ).

  • NSO 2018 Exam Date: 1, 15 & 27 November 2018, as per the dates are chosen by the school.

In 2013-14,  27000 schools participated in various Olympiads conducted by SOF and students from close to 1350 cities and 16 countries participated. In 2014-15, 31500 schools participated in various Olympiads and students in more than 1400 cities participated in it.

21st NSO 1st Level Exam Awards

  • Gold Medal: Gold medal and Merit Certificates will be given to top ten rank holders from each class.
  • These awards will be given to the winners from 20 Zones/States for their performance in the 1st level Olympiads.

Important note related to the 21st NSO 1st level Awards:

  • Only one award will be given to each winner.
  • Therefore, top 3 rank holders will get the awards based on their International ranks.
  • The award for them in the state ranks will be offered to the next rank holder.

National Science Olympiad Application form and Process

National Science Olympiad is open to the students of classes 1 to 12 and registrations are received from the schools in the prescribed proforma below. NSO Application form is also available below. The last date to apply for IMO NSO 2018 is 31 August 2018.

  • Registration sheet for the school/students and the information booklet are posted to the schools all over India and abroad.
  • The school's coordinating teacher will be generating the students' Roll Numbers as per the guidelines.
  • A copy of these roll numbers along with the students' registration and school registration sheet should be sent to the Foundation's office before 31 August 2018.

Registration Fees for National Science Olympiad

  • A participation fee of Rs. 125 is charged from each student. The School shall retain Rs. 25 per student per Olympiad for its expenses as exam centre.
  • Mode of payment of Fees- The school can make the payment via Demand Draft or through NEFT/ RTGS

National Science Olympiad Selection Process

  • National Science Olympiad is conducted in two levels: Level 1 and  Level 2.
  • Top 500 international ranks and top 10 state rank in NSO stage 1 are eligible for level 2 exam

NSO Level 1: The first level of National Science Olympiad is organised in the respective schools of the participants during the school hours.

  • The level 1 competition is a written objective type test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35/50 objective type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1 to class 12.
  • The question paper consists of Science and Mental Ability section.
  • There are separate question papers for each class.
  • The medium of the test is English.
  • CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Board syllabus is followed for setting the test papers.
  • The exam is conducted during school hours.

NSO Level 2: The qualifiers of the second round would include the following:

  • Top 5% of candidates class wise who appear for the 1st level National Science Olympiad.
  • Due weightage to marks scored in different sections will be given. Each section is accorded separate weightage.
  • Statewide top 10 rank holders were class-wise.
  • Class topper where at least ten students from a class appear in the exam & score 75% qualifying marks.

NSO 1st Level Cut off Marks

The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) releases NSO Cut-off marks on its official website. The cutoff marks given is of top 5% of the 1st level. Candidates are advised to see the table below to check the previous year NSO 1st level cut off marks.

NSO Cut off Marks-Important Points to remember

  • The student scoring total cut off marks or more will qualify for the second level NSO.
  • In case two or more students achieve the same total marks, higher weightage will be given to M3, M2, and M1 sections respectively to determine ranks and 2nd level qualifications.
  • In addition to the above, the following students will also qualify for the 2nd level:
    • Top 25 rank holders from each zone and each class and 
    • Class toppers provided they fulfill the following conditions:
      • Class must have 10 or more participants
      • Class topper has scored 50% or more marks
