About International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)

11th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) is organised by SOF or Science Olympiad Foundation, which is a Non-Profit organisation. Every year Science Olympiad Foundation organises four Olympiads:

From this year SOF has introduced two more Olympiad as follows:

  • International Company Secretaries Olympiad (ICSO)
  • international Sports Knowledge Olympiad (ISKO)

The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) is an educational foundation and a non-profit organisation, based in New Delhi (India), which promotes Science, Introductory Computer Education, Mathematics and English in India and other places like Singapore, Oman, Qatar, Nepal,  Bahrain, SriLanka, U.A.E. and
 Durban. 

  • IMO (International Mathematics Olympiad) is conducted by SOF and is a means to identify and encourage the mathematical creativity of children in schools across India and abroad.
  • All students participating in IMO (1st level) get a Math Quotient (MQ), giving their Score, School Rank, City Rank, State Rank, International Rank and Percentile, as well as a Certificate of Participation
  • SOF also generates a performance report for all participating schools known as School Mathematics Quotient.
  • IMO 2017 Exam date: IMO 2017 first level of examination will be conducted on two dates that are 5 & 14 December 2017 as per convenience of the School

What are the two IMOs and how are they different from each other?

  • IMO at India Level: IMO is conducted by SOF and it ends at India Level and the details of the Olympiad is given on this page. 
  • International IMO: But, If you are really a superb student of Mathematics then you should take Regional Mathematical Olympiad and on qualifying that you will be eligible to take Indian National Mathematics Olympiad and finally 6 students will be selected and they will represent India in 58th IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These students are trained by Indian Statistical Institute. This olympiad witness participation from more than 100 countries.

17th IMO 1st Level Exam Awards

  • Gold Medal: Gold medal and Merit Certificates will be given to top ten rank holders from each class.
  • These awards will be given to the winners from 20 Zones/States for their performance in the 1st level Olympiads.

Important note related to the 17th IMO 1st level Awards:

  • Only one award will be given to each winner.
  • Therefore, top 3 rank holders will get the awards based on their International ranks.
  • The award for them in the state ranks will be offered to the next rank holder.

International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) Application form and Process

  • The event is open to the students of classes 1 to 12 and registrations are received from the schools in the prescribed proforma.
  • Registration sheet for the school/students and the information booklet are posted to the schools all over India and abroad. 
  • The school's coordinating teacher will be generating the students' Roll Numbers as per the guidelines.
  • A copy of these roll numbers along with the students' registration and school registration sheet should be sent to the Foundation's office before 5 October 2017

Registration Fees for International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)

  • A participation fee of Rs. 120 is charged from each student. The School shall retain Rs. 20 per student per Olympiad for its expenses as exam centre.
  • Mode of payment of Fees- The school can make the payment via Demand Draft or through NEFT/RTGS
    • Demand Draft: It should be made in favour of Science Olympiad Foundation payable at New Delhi

International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) Selection Process

  • Selection of the student would be done on the basis of the exam.
  • Results of both the levels of IMO are declared within 6 weeks of the examination.
    • The results are sent to the schools concerned.
    • The results are also made available on SOF's website. 

IMO Syllabus for Class 1-12

International Mathematics Olympiad is conducted in 2 levels

Level 1: The 1st level is organised in the Schools of the participants during the school hours.

  • It is a 60 min objective type exam comprising of 35/50 questions for class 1-12.
  • The test will be in English language and will consist of following sections:
    • Mathematical ability
    • Logical and analytical reasoning
    • Everyday Mathematics
  • Each section will be accorded separate weightage.
  • CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabus is followed for setting the test papers.
  • Exam Dates: 5 & 14 December 2017, as per the dates chosen by schools.

Level 2:
 The qualifiers to the second round would include the following:

  • Top 5% of candidates class wise who has appeared for the 1st level exam.
  • Top 25 rank holders class wise & Zone wise.
  • Class topper where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & scores 75% qualifying marks.

Exam Dates: 2nd level exam will be held on 2nd or 3rd Sunday of Feb 2018.

IMO Ranking Criteria


In case of level one exam, the following criteria will apply

  • Marks obtained in relevant level
  • Marks obtained in sections of the relevant level. Each section is accorded separate weightage.
  • In the first level exam, one rank may have more than one student.

 In case of level 2, the following criteria will apply

  • Marks scored in level 2 exams.
  • In a case of a tie, weightage will be accorded as per the following priority:
  • Marks scored in sections in level two exam accorded more weightage.
  • Marks scored in level 1 exam.
  • Marks scored in sections in level one exam accorded more weightage.
  • Past performance of the student.
  • Interview conducted by SOF.
  • In level two, no two students will be given the same rank.
