About International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)

10th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) is organised by SOF or Science Olympiad Foundation, which is a Non-Profit organisation. 

Every year Science Olympiad Foundation organises four Olympiads

From this year SOF has introduced two more Olympiad as follows:

  • International Company Secretaries Olympiad (ICSO)
  • international Sports Knowledge Olympiad (ISKO)

International Mathematics Olympiad - IMO 2016

  • IMO (International Mathematics Olympiad) is conducted by SOF and is a means to identify and encourage the mathematical creativity of children in schools across India and abroad.
  • All students participating in IMO (1st level) get a Math Quotient (MQ), giving their Score, School Rank, City Rank, State Rank, International Rank and Percentile, as well as a Certificate of Participation
  • SOF also generates a performance report for all participating schools known as School Mathematics Quotient.
  • IMO 2016 Exam date: IMO 2016 first level of examination will be conducted on two dates that is December 1 & 12, 2016 as per convenience of the School

What are the two IMOs and how are they different from each other?

  • IMO at India Level: IMO is conducted by SOF and it ends at India Level and the details of the Olympiad is given on this page. 
  • International IMO: But, If you are really a superb student of Mathematics then you should take Regional Mathematical Olympiad and on qualifying that you will be eligible to take Indian National Mathematics Olympiad and finally 6 students will be selected and they will represent India in 58th IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These students are trained by Indian Statistical Institute. This olympiad witness participation from more than 100 countries.

  • Students should be registered through the schools only. Individual registration by the student is not accepted.

IMO 1st Level Exam Awards

  • Gold, Silver and Bronze medal to top 3 rank holders from each class.
  • This will be applicable to winners for 20 zones/states for performance in the 1st level Olympiad.

  • Certificate of merit to all 2nd level qualifiers.
  • Students performance report for each participating student.
  • The respective school of each students with International rank from 1-3 (both inclusive) is awarded a Science Intellect Trophy (SIT) for having the winning students on their rolls.

International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) Application form and Process

  • The event is open to the students of classes 1 to 12 and registrations are received from the schools in the prescribed pro-forma.
  • Registration sheet for the school / students and the information booklet are posted to the schools all over India and abroad. 
  • The school's coordinating teacher will be generating the students' Roll Numbers as per the guidelines given.
  • A copy of these roll numbers along with the students' registration and school registration sheet should be sent to the Foundation's office before August 31, 2016

Registration Fees for International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)

  • A participation fee of Rs. 120 is charged from each student. The School shall retain Rs. 20 per student per olympiad for its expenses as exam centre.
  • Mode of payment of Fees- The school can make the payment via Demand Draft or through NEFT/ RTGS
    • Demand Draft : It should be made in favour of Science Olympaid Foundation payable at New Delhi

International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) Selection Process

  • Selection of the student would be done on the basis of the exam.
  • Results of both the levels of IMO are declared within 6 weeks of the examination.
    • The results are sent to the schools concerned.
    • The results are also made available on SOF's website. 

IMO Syllabus for Class 1-12

International Mathematics Olympiad is conducted in 2 levels

Level 1: the 1st level is organized in the Schools of the participants during the school hours.

  • It is a 60 min objective type exam comprising of 35/50 questions for class 1-12.
  • The test will be in English language and will consist of following sections:
    • Mathematical ability
    • Logical and analytical reasoning
    • Everyday Mathematics
  • Each section will be accorded separate weightage.
  • CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabus is followed for setting the test papers.
  • Exam dates: December 1 & 12, 2016, as per the dates chosen by schools.

Level 2:
 The qualifiers to second round would include the following:

  • Top 5% of candidates class wise who has appeared for the 1st level exam.
  • State wise top 10 rank holders classwise.
  • Class topper where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & scores 75% qualifying marks

IMO Ranking Criteria

In case of level one exam, the following criteria will apply

  • Marks obtained in relevant level
  • Marks obtained in sections of the relevant level. Each section is accorded separate weightage.
  • In the first level exam, one rank may have more than one student.

 In case of level 2, the following criteria will apply

  • Marks scored in level 2 exams.
  • In case of a tie, weightage will be accorded as per the following priority:
  • Marks scored in sections in level two exam accorded more weightage.
  • Marks scored in level 1 exam.
  • Marks scored in sections in level one exam accorded more weightage.
  • Past performance of the student.
  • Interview conducted by SOF.
  • In level two, no two students will be given the same rank.
