About CLAT 2018

CLAT is Common Law Admission Test conducted on 13 May 2018 for admission into  5-years undergraduate and 1-year postgraduates programs. It is conducted by each of 19 National Law University rotationally. Around 54,000 students appeared in CLAT 2018 which was conducted by National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi, Kerala. The qualified candidates in CLAT 2018 can take admission into 19 NLUs and around 43 others private institutes/colleges for below mentioned law programmes. CLAT 2018 Eligibility criteria

Nationality: Only Indian Nationals/NRIs are eligible to appear for CLAT 2018 Exam whereas foreign candidates are not eligible.

The eligibility criteria for candidates (Indian Nationals only) seeking admission through CLAT 2018 in Undergraduate and Post Graduate Courses are different. The eligibility criteria for the UG and PG courses are given separately below.

Eligibility Criteria for CLAT 2018-19 - For UG Students

Age:

  • The candidate by 1 July 2018, must not have attained the age of:
  • Twenty (20) years in case of General, NRI, NRI Sponsored Category
  • Twenty-Two (22) years in case of SC/ST/OBC/ Specially-abled person category candidates.
  • There is no upper age limit to appear in CLAT Exam

Academic Qualification

  • Candidate should have passed Class 12 or its equivalent certificate from a recognised Board. Those appearing in the qualifying examination in March/ April 2018 are also eligible to apply.
  • No provisional admission shall be provided to those candidates who are not submitting the result of the qualifying examination at the time of admission/within the timeframe prescribed by the respective Universities/ Institutes.
  • Candidate should not have secured less than 45% marks in aggregate (40% in case of SC and ST candidates)

Eligibility Criteria for CLAT 2018-19 - For PG Students

Age

There is no upper age limit for the candidate applying for the Post Graduate CLAT 2018 Exam, However, the applicant must be a graduate to apply for the CLAT 2018.

Academic Qualification

The applicants must have done graduation in (LL.B./Five-Year Integrated LL.B. (Hons.)/ any other equivalent) with the minimum marks as listed below:

  • Fifty-five percent (55%) marks in case of candidates belonging to Unreserved / OBC/Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and other categories
  • Fifty percent (50%) marks in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category
  • Final year candidates for the qualifying exam can also apply but they will have to submit the proof of the completion of the previous course for the admission for Post Graduate Law courses via CLAT 2018.

The application process for CLAT 2018 was started on 1 January 2018 and the eligible candidates would be able to fill the application form through online mode. The last date to fill the application form was 31 March 2018.

Payment of CLAT 2018 Application Fee

The applicants can pay the application fee for the CLAT 2018 Application Form via online mode only. Applicants are required to pay the application fee via any of the methods listed below. There will be no provision for payment of the offline application form payment.

Submission of the Application Form

 The candidates are suggested to submit the application form only after ensuring the details in the form is correct. Once submitted, no alteration or editing in the application form can be done. Candidates need to keep at least two copies of application form along with them for future reference. There is no need to submit the hard copy of the application form to the CLAT office.

CLAT 2018 Fees

The CLAT 2018 Application Fee is given in the table below for each category. The candidates should make the payment of the application fee as per their category. The payment can be made using Debit/ Credit Card or Net Banking. Candidates are required to see the table below:

CLAT 2018 Result and Counselling

The admission to the UG and PG programmes in participating universities under CLAT 2018 will be completed through centralised online counselling. The allotment of seats will be done based on "merit cum preference" i.e. the CLAT Rank. Online counselling shall start after the declaration of CLAT-2018 results.

The candidates who get shortlisted for the admission in National Law University by the CLAT 2018 will get the counselling in which they have to keep the points mentioned below:

  • These students will pay Counselling fees of Rs 50,000 (refundable) either via bank challan or online mode.
  • Candidates withdrawing from the admission process will be refunded Rs 50,000 after deduction of Rs 10,000 as processing fee.
  • If after the payment of counselling fees, the candidate's name appears on the waiting list and they fail to get admission, the amount will be refunded to them.
  • During the online counselling session, the candidates are required to fill up all the available choices of National Law Universities for the UG course in order of their preference.
  • Seats shall be allotted taking into consideration candidate’s choice and merit

CLAT 2018 Merit List & Allotment of Seats

The CLAT selection process is done in four stages. CLAT 2018 merit list will be the basis of shortlisting the candidates. 

  • CLAT 2018 Merit: The first stage is the CLAT 2018 merit list in which, the candidate should not have scored less than 45% marks in case of Unreserved/OBC/P.W.D. category. (40% marks in case of SC/ST category candidates).
  •  Preference of Institutes: The second stage of the selection process is preferences of the institutes, the students shortlisted in the merit list are then called for an online counselling where candidates will have to give their choice of NLUs.
  • Online Counselling: The third stage of the selection process is Online counselling, the selected number of students in various categories will be called for counselling against the actual number of available seats.
  • Final Seat Allotment: The last stage of the selection process is the final seat allotment list which will be published on the official website of CLAT.
    • If required, the CLAT Office will publish three more times the Subsidiary List of candidates allotted to various Universities against the actual left out seats.

CLAT 2018 Tie Breaking

In case the candidates obtain equal marks in CLAT 2018, the merit will be decided as per the tie-breaking rules. The tie-breaking condition is different for UG and PG courses which are given below.

For Admission to UG Courses

In a case of equal marks secured by candidates, the procedure to break the tie will be as per the following order:

  • Higher marks in the section of legal aptitude in CLAT 2018
  • Higher age will be given preference
  • Computerised draw of lots

For Admission to UG Courses

In the case of equal marks, the breaking of the tie shall be by procedure and order as under:

  • Higher age
  • The computerised draw of lots.

Important Points for Persons with Disabilities

  • Additional Time to Attempt the Question Paper: PwD Candidates will be given an additional 40 minutes while appearing for CLAT 2018.
  • Students with impairment: Candidates are required to request for a scribe at the specified place in the CLAT 2018 Application form.They are required to submit the following documents while applying for CLAT 2018:
    • Certificate of impairment from a competent authority.
    • A statement clearly mentioned if the candidate will bring his/her own scribe or arranged by CLAT officials.
    • Academic qualification of the scribe is required to be at least one standard lower than the candidate.
    • Proof of academic qualification of a scribe.
    • A declaration from the scribe (if brought by the candidate) that the scribe complies with the prerequisites and he/she will not in any way help the candidate answer any question in the paper, apart from his/her regular duty of reading out the questions and clicking the correct answers.

Important Points for NRI/NRI Sponsored/Foreign Nationals:

  • Details of admissions for NRI/NRI sponsored candidates and the number of seats allotted to them is mentioned in CLAT 2018 Brochure.While some NLUs will conduct direct admissions of such candidates, some others will do so on the basis of CLAT 2018 score.
  • Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) Cardholders will be eligible for admission under the NRI seats available in some of the member National Law Universities.
    • Such candidates can upload the scanned copy of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)/Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) document at the relevant section issued to them by the Competent Authority.
  • Foreign Nationals interested in getting admission into any of the National Law Universities participating in CLAT 2018 can directly contact the NLUs.
