ILEP- International Leaders in Education Program 2017

ILEP - The International Leaders in Education Program is for the outstanding secondary school teachers with minimum 5 years of classroom teaching experience. The program aims to bring the teachers from around the globe to the United States to develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the United States.

The International Leaders in Education Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by IREX. ILEP is a 5 months program along with an Internship at U.S university graduate school of education.

The ILEP fellows are equipped with the following skills through targeted coursework, intensive training, and collaboration with colleagues from around the globe in the 5 months program 

• Enhanced teaching methodologies
• Lesson planning techniques
• Teaching strategies for their home environments
• Leadership abilities &
• Technology skills in Education

ILEP selects fellows with field experience at a secondary school which complements the coursework and actively engages Fellows with American teachers and students.

The United States – India Educational Foundation (USIEF) promotes mutual understanding between the nationals of India and the U.S. through the educational exchange of outstanding scholars, professionals and students.

• The last date to apply is 15 April 2017 (IREX) and the last date to apply for the Indians is 1 April 2017 (USIEF). The Program will commence from January 2017 and end in May 2017.

• Air Fare: Round-trip airfare to and within the U.S.A
• • A baggage/shipping allowance; and J-1 visa support;
• Program Fee: The organising body will cover the full academic program fees.
  • A book/professional development allowance;
• Housing (generally shared with other program fellows) and meals.
• A daily allowance for incidentals during the university academic program.
• Accident and sickness medical insurance coverage;
• Transportation to the practicum school (if necessary);
• Alumni Program: The opportunity to apply for alumni small grants. After successful completion of the program, eligible alumni may compete for small grants to implement self-designed projects that benefit and empower their home schools and communities.
• Orientation: A pre-departure orientation held in participant’s home country and a welcome orientation in Washington, D.C.;
• All participants will receive a technology allowance and instructional technology training.
• Small Grant Program: After returning home, teachers will be eligible to participate in a small grants program to request funds for essential teaching materials, follow-on training for other teachers, collaborative projects between their home schools and U.S. schools, and other activities that build on the exchange experience

IREX which administers the program is an international non-profit organisation and has got the right to verify all of the information mentioned in the application. In a case of any discrepancy and false information, the application will be declared invalid and ineligible for the applicant.

General guidelines for filling the Application Form

• Please answer all questions on the application form.
• Include your full, legal name as spelt on your passport (if available) or other photo identification.
• Please type or print in black ink.
• Write your full name, city, and country in the top right corner of each page.  
• Include complete contact information (including zip/postal codes for all addresses and city codes for all phone and fax numbers if available).
• If a question does not apply to you, enter N/A (not applicable).
• Hand sign the Privacy Policy on the last page with ink.

It is to be noted that all applicants must include the Institutional Support and Reference Form (ISRF), which must be completed by the supervisor of the school he/she is currently employed. The form must be signed in ink. An English translation must be provided if the form and reference letter those not written in English.

Format of the application form

ILEP Fellows will be selected through a merit-based open competition. Top candidates will be interviewed by an interview panel, and must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or provide valid results from within the past year, (test date no earlier than June 2015).

Selection Criteria

• An applicant must have English language skills satisfaction to managing coursework, develop lesson plans, and team-teach in U.S. schools (a minimum paper-based or equivalent TOEFL score of 500 is required for ILEP participation).
• An applicant must show his/her commitment to teaching in the field of secondary education and potential leadership;
• An applicant must possess professional and educational experience and achievements;
• An applicant must have the ability to develop long-term linkages between U.S. and home country educational institutions and schools;
• An applicant must have maturity, flexibility, and ability to function independently for an intensive U.S.-based training program with very limited free time for personal travel or sightseeing;
• An applicant must have willingness and capacity to work and live collaboratively with international peers to foster a positive learning community for professional development;
• An applicant must have the ability to express ideas clearly and effectively; and
• Applicants who have had few or no opportunities to travel to the U.S. will be given priority.
