Maths Olympiad is fully funded by diverse entities, so the eligibility criteria that need to be fulfilled by the students is not always the same. Some scholarships are merit based so they simply require the marks of the last qualifying exam while some rely heavily on standardised test scores to select the students.

Maths Olympiad for School going students is conducted in both at a national as well as international level. The Scholarships for School going Maths Students can be divided into two parts

International Mathematical Olympiad

The International Mathematical Olympiad is one of the biggest Maths Olympiad that is conducted at an International level with 100 countries from 5 continents participating in this Maths Olympiad. This Maths Olympiad is conducted in steps that have been described in brief below

Maths Olympiad Stages

  • Stage 1:IOQM
  • Stage 2: Indian National Mathematical Olympiad
  • Stage 3: International Mathematical Olympiad

Stage 1: IOQM - It is the first stage of the Maths Olympiad and is conducted at all India level. Read more about IOQM

Stage 3: Indian National Mathematical Olympiad: The third Stepping Stone towards International Mathematical Olympiad is Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. It is a Maths Olympiad in which students who have qualified RMO from their respective regions are eligible to participate. On qualifying INMO, High School students will get an opportunity to participate in International Mathematical Olympiad, the world championship in mathematics.

Stage 4: International Mathematical Olympiad: The last or the Final Step in International Mathematical Olympiad itself. It is the world championship of mathematics for high school students organized annually in different countries across the globe. One can participate in IMO only if you have qualified for Regional Mathematical Olympiad and then, the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. On qualifying INMO, students have to attend INMO training camp. Thereafter 6 students are shortlisted who participate in IMO to represent India.

SOF Maths Olympiad: International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) 

As the name suggests, the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) is an International level Math Olympiad that is conducted by SOF. Given below are the brief details about this Maths Olympiad

  • Organising Body: Science Olympiad Foundation(SOF)
  • Eligibility: Class 1-12
  • Application Process: Students are required to apply via their schools
  • Selection Process: Students are always selected on the basis of the Written Exam. The International Mathematics Olympiad is conducted into levels:
    • Level 1 is organised in the respective schools during the school hours for Class 1-12
    • Duration: 60 minutes
    • Type of Questions: Objective
    • Sections covered: Mathematical ability, Logical and analytical reasoning, Everyday Mathematics 
    • Level 2 is organised for the students who qualify the Level 1. Qualifiers include Top 5% of students class wise, State wise top 10 rank holders classwise and Class topper where at least 10 students from each class had appeared.

Silver Zone Maths Olympiad: International Olympiad of Mathematics 

International Olympiad of Mathematics (iOM) is another Maths Olympiad that is conducted at an International Level by Silver Zone. A brief summary of various aspects of iOM is given below

  • Organising Body: Silver Zone
  • Eligibility: Class 1-12
  • Application Process: Students are required to apply via their schools
  • Selection Process: Students are always selected on the basis of the Written Exam conducted. The International Mathematics Olympiad is conducted into levels:
    • Level 1 is organized in the respective schools during the school hours for Class 1-12
    • Level 2 is organized for the students who qualify the Level 1. Qualifiers include the students who have a rank within Top 500.
    • Level 3 is organized for the students who qualify the Level 2. 

Math Talent Search Examination (MTSE) by IISMA

IISMA is an organization that works on the development of mathematical education at all levels. It conducts an exam called Math Talent Search Examination (MTSE) at an all-India level the details of which have been given below

  • Eligibility: Class 3-9
  • Application Process: Students are required to apply individually online at the official website

Maths Scholarship for Under Graduate Studies

There are various institutes in India that provide Maths Scholarship to undergraduate students. Given below are some of  the institutes that provide a Maths Scholarship

ISI scholarship for Bsc Maths Students

  • ISI is the premier institute of statistical research in India established in 1931 and has its headquarters in Kolkata with its four centres located in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Tezpur. ISI offers several courses like Bachelors and Masters in Mathematics and statistics etc.
  • Students are offered admission in Bachelors and Masters in Mathematics and statistics course on the basis of Indian Statistical Institute Entrance Exam which is conducted every year.
  • Stipends are granted in the first instance for one semester/academic year only. They are renewed periodically if the progress of the student is found satisfactory
  • All non-sponsored students and research fellows admitted to various programmes receive stipends, fellowships, and contingency/book grants as given below. Non-sponsored students are not required to pay any tuition fee for any of the programmes

CMI Chennai Scholarship for Bsc Maths Students

  • CMI is a rare example of a public-private partnership in research and education in India. It is a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the mathematical sciences.
  • Students are offered admission in B.Sc. Hons course on the basis of Chennai Mathematical Institute Entrance Exam which is conducted every year.
  • A Limited number of scholarships are offered to the students who seek admission in B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics and Computer Science or B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics and Physics
  • Students who are being offered Full Scholarship receive a full waiver on the tuition fees and a monthly allowance of Rs. 4000.
  • Students who are being offered half scholarship for them only the tuition fees get waivered
  • They are renewed periodically if the progress of the student is found satisfactory
  • All students of B.Sc. (Honours) will receive an additional monthly scholarship of Rs. 1000 made possible through a generous private donation.

  • Organising Body: National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
  • Eligibility: First class B.A./B.Sc. degree in mathematics or students holding a B.A.(Hons.)/B.Sc.(Hons.) degree in mathematics
  • Application Process: Students are required to apply individually
  • Selection Process: Selection will be made on the basis of a written test followed by an interview of short-listed students.
  • Reward: Successful students will receive a scholarship of Rs. 6,000per month, during the two-year period of the post-graduate programme. Subject to renewal upon satisfactory performance.

Maths Scholarship for PhD Students

A PhD student can also receive Maths Scholarship under various fields of Mathematics. Given below is a list of the Maths Scholarship that is available for PhD students.

Ramanujan Research Studentship 

Trinity College offers Ramanujan Research Studentship to a student from India who wishes to undertake a PhD in the broad fields of Pure or Applied Mathematics at the University of Cambridge.

  • The Ramanujan Student must become a member of Trinity College and must be admitted by the University’s Graduate Admissions Office for study in the University.
  • In the first instance, these students are normally expected to take the nine-month course leading to the Master of Advanced Study (MASt) in Mathematics.
  • The Ramanujan Studentship is normally awarded for nine months in the first instance. Thereafter it is further renewed for 3 years subject to the performance of the student.
    • The studentship covers Graduate Course Fees,
    • Maintenance allowance (at up to the minimum rate set by the University), 
    • A return ticket from India to the United Kingdom.

Scholarships For Pursuing Doctoral Program (PhD) In Mathematics by NBHM

  • Organising Body: National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
  • Eligibility: M.A/M.Sc. (Mathematics) degree holders or final year students of these degree courses
  • Application Process: students are required to apply individually
  • Selection Process: Selection will be made on the basis of a written test
  • Reward: Successful students will  receive a scholarship amount in the manner given below:
    • For First Year and Second Year: Rs. Rs.16,000 per month
    • For Subsequent Years: Rs.18,000 per month
    • Contingency grant: Rs.20,000 per year
