A list of Olympiad for Indian Students is given in this article and it discusses all major National & International Olympiads organized for Indian students. The Olympiads are the platform where the brightest young minds of the world meet and take on exciting intellectual challenges. This article describes the name of the top Olympiad Exam for Indian school students, the name of the conducting body, the process for selection of the students for the National & International Olympiad, reward and aim of the Olympiads. We know Olympiad is not a step to making a career, but it is a big platform to provide a stimulus to begin a career in Science, Mathematics and many other subjects.

List of Olympiads for Indian Students

In India,the  Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) and the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) are the main organizations that conduct written tests and provide training for selection in the top National and International Olympiads. The Olympiads are conducted at the three levels i.e.

  • International Level Olympiads
  • National Level Olympiads

International Level Olympiads

International Olympiad brings talented secondary and higher secondary students from all over the world together in a very friendly & high-level contest. International Olympiad provides a golden chance to start a career in the field of science and mathematics specifically on the international level. The International Olympiad is not only a competition, but it also forms the seeds of scientific collaboration which help the talented young students later in life. HBCSE aims to promote excellence in science and mathematics among young students.

National Level Olympiads

National Level Olympiads are conducted within the boundaries of the country; there may be the support and involvement of the international organizations, but the important involvement of the audience is at the National level.  These Olympiads in India are conducted by various NGOs and Institutions like SOF, TERI, Unified Council, etc. In all these olympiads the registration is through school Authorities. The Olympiad given here is the reputed ones who witness participation across the country.

IAPT Olympiads

The Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) coordinates the Physics Olympiad, Chemistry, Astronomy and Junior Science Olympiad for India along with HBCSE. It conducts the National Level Examination in which approximately 30,000 - 40,000 students participate every year. IAPT selects the top 30 students from each olympiad for the Olympiad Training Camp then the HBCSE select the team for International Olympiad. 

Maths Olympiad 

In India, the mathematical Olympiad is conducted by the HBCSE. India has been participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) since 1989 and since 2015 India also started participating in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) and Asia Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO).

The National Level Olympiads are also held to recognise and appreciate the talented individuals in different aspects like few Olympiads in India are conducted subject wise for example NES (National Standardise Exams) for various subjects like Physics (NSEP), Biology (NSEB), Chemistry (NSEC), Astronomy (NSEA), Junior Science (NSEJS).

Physics Olympiad

NSEP is a Physics Olympiad which is conducted by IAPT and is the first step for the International Physics Olympiad. Students who qualify for NSEP are eligible to participate in the Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO) which is a qualifying stage of the International Physics Olympiad

International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is a yearly Physics Olympiad. It is the final stage of the Physics Olympiad at the International level. A team of 5 students along with two leaders from each nation participate in IPhO. To participate in International Physics Olympiad, students have to qualify for NSEP and INPhO. 

Chemistry Olympiad

NSEC, National Standard Examination in Chemistry, is a Chemistry Olympiad which is organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) in collaboration with the Association of Chemistry Teachers (ACT). Students who will qualify for NSEC will be eligible candidates to participate in Indian National Chemistry Olympiad INChO. Students who will qualify for INChO will be eligible to participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad which is the final stage of the Chemistry Olympiad. 

Junior Science Olympiad

NSEJS is a Junior Science Olympiad which is organized by IAPT for students of classes up to 10. NSEJS, National Standard Examination in Junior Science, is a qualifying step for students to take part in Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO). Students qualifying in Indian National Junior Science Olympiad will be eligible to participate in International Junior Science Olympiad. 

Biology Olympiad

NSEB, National Standard Examination in Biology, is a Biology Olympiad organized by IAPT in collaboration with the Association of Teachers in Biological Sciences (ATBS). NSEB is a nationwide Examination for students studying in class 12 or lower level. NSEB is the First and Only screening Test leading toward the International Olympiad in Biology. Students who will qualify for NSEB will be eligible candidates to participate in Indian National Biology Olympiad which is the qualifying stage for the International Biology Olympiad

Astronomy Olympiad

NSEA is an Astronomy Olympiad for the school students of up to class 12. NSEA, National Standard Examination in Astronomy, is organized by (IAPT) and is the first step for the selection of students in the International Astronomy Olympiad Program. Students on qualify for the NSEA contest will be eligible for participating in Indian National Astronomy Olympiad which is the second stage for participation in International Astronomy Olympiad.

European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)

European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is an international mathematics competition for girls. A team of 4 girls is selected from the participating countries to represent their country at the European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). EGMO is similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with two papers taken on consecutive days. EGMO is held in April every year in any of the European countries. 

Girl students who are willing to represent India in EGMO are required to clear all the stages of the National Level Mathematical Olympiad conducted by HBCSE which are:

  • IOQM (Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics)
  • INMO (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad)
  • IMOTC (International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp)

Asia Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO)

APMO contest is only for the students belonging to the Asian country and rim of Pacific Ocean countries. Every year, APMO is held on the second Monday of March for participating countries in the North and South Americas, and on the second Tuesday of March for participating countries in the Western Pacific and Asia. The Asia Pacific Mathematics Olympiad competition consists of solving 5 questions in four and a half hours of varying difficulty.  Students in India who are willing to participate in APMO are required to clear all the stages of the National Level Mathematical Olympiad conducted by HBCSE.

Computing & Informatics Olympiad

 IARCS conduct the competition every year for Indian Computing Olympiad (ICO). The main objective of the Indian Computing Olympiad competition is to identify Indian school students with outstanding skills in computer programming & algorithm. Based on the performance in Indian Computing Olympiad, four students are selected to represent India at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). International Olympiad in Informatics is one of the 12 International Science Olympiads organized annually.

The Indian Computing Olympiad is open to all students from any board in India. The students who are enrolled in any Indian school up to class 12 during the current academic year are eligible to participate in the competition.  

World Robotics Olympiad

World Robot Olympiad is one of the tops and largest robotic competitions in the world for 9 to 25-year-old age students who are studying in the field of science and technology. The talented students are selected by the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) which is an International Robotic Olympiad. WRO India is a team-based challenge, and the participating teams are required to create, build and design a robot model that can behave and look like a human athlete.

Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) Olympiad

Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) is a non-profit organization which works to promote science, mathematics, introductory computer education and English language skills among young & talented students in India. The students desirous to participate in the program organized by Science Olympiad Foundation can register themselves only through their Schools.  There are six SOF Olympiads annually in India which are the following:

  1. National Cyber Olympiad (NCO)
  2. National Science Olympiad (NSO)
  3. International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)
  4. International English Olympiad (IEO)
  5. International General Knowledge Olympiad (IGKO)
  6. International Company Secretaries Olympiad (ICSO)

Unified Council Olympiad

Unified Council is a progressive organisation working in the field of education. The Unified Council has been working to bring together, the best young brains in the area of education and it is also an endeavour to make the young generation strong and nourish their brains for a bright and enterprising future. Unified Council organises programs in the countries like India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Yemen, Nepal, Libya, Bahrain, Iran and Tanzania. The students who want to participate in the program organised by Unified Council can register themselves only through their Schools.  The following programs are organised by Unified Council:

Silver Zone Olympiad

Silver Zone is an educational and, non-profitable and non-government organisation situated in Delhi, India. The silver zone organisation has been working for the last 12 years and has been organising talent search examinations on national & International level subjects. The students who want to participate in Silver Zone Olympiad programs can register themselves only through their Schools. Silver Zone conducts the following Olympiad:

Finance Olympiad 

National Finance Olympiad (NFO) organised by International by International Institute of Financial Market and sponsored by Economic Times. The Olympiad aims to make young students familiar with money management art which is a basic requirement for everybody in the world. The NFO is only for the students who are studying in classes 8 to 12. The students can participate in the competition individually and also through their schools. The winner students will receive a cash prize worth Rs 100000. Finance Olympiad

Green Olympiad

The Green Olympiad is a written examination conducted by Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and supported by the Central Board of School Examination (CBSE) every year which is based on the subject of Environment. More than 2 lakh school students participate in the Olympiad. The student studying in CBSE-affiliated schools in classes 4 to 10 are only eligible to participate in the competition. Ministry of Environment and Forest awards Certificates of Participation to all students who participated in the contest and winners from every state gets Cash prize. Green Olympiad
