OTBA is Open Textbook assessment, and it was introduced by CBSE from March 2014. OTBA 2017 would be an open textbook assessment for class 9 and class 11 students. The main objective of OTBA is to relieve the students from the burden of mugging up of content and provide opportunities in the effective use of memory and acquiring skills of information processing. CBSE had released a circular on December 5, 2016, for further information on OTBA 2017. CBSE had released the OTBA Material for Class 9 and OTBA Material for Class 11 in Hindi & English.

CBSE OTBA 2017 for Class 9

  • CBSE has released OTBA material for Class 9 for the summative assessment 2 (SA 2). For Class 9 the OTBA material has been released for English, Hindi, Social Science & Mathematics. 
  • This OTBA - Open Text Material will be used for Summative Assesment 2 - (SA 2)
  • Each text material includes sample questions and a suggestive marking scheme for use of teachers.

CBSE Conduct SA 2 from March 2017 Onwards

The CBSE Schools will conduct the second Summative Assessment commonly known as SA 2 for academic session 2016-17 in March 2017 for Class 9 & 11 students. School themselves will conduct the SA 2 and CBSE will help the school in the online generation of the Question Paper. OTBA for Class 9 2017 will be part of SA 2.

The Board will support schools to generate online question papers in the following major subjects:

Guidelines for Teachers for OTBA

  • The themes given in this text material should be assigned to the students in groups for further understanding, analysis and discussion.
  • Each text material includes sample questions and a suggestive marking scheme for the use of teachers. The assessment must be done as a whole, considering the application of the knowledge gained by the students in the unit specified in the syllabus.
  • The teachers should guide students, provide feedback and encourage open responses in solving a situation.
  • It is important to be open-minded about the students’ views while checking their answers.
  • Due credits should be given to the relevance of the content, analysis, logical presentation of arguments and conclusions drawn in the answer.

Kind of Questions that would be asked in OTBA

  • Questions will be of based on one of the themes given in each subject. The questions asked will be open-ended.
  • The students will be provided with the textual content related to the theme with the question paper.
  • The student must be able to present his/her arguments logically, coherently and cogently.
