JEE Main 2018 Exam Guidelines - JEE Main 2018 Exam is scheduled to be conducted on 8 April 2018, in offline mode. While the computer-based test will be held on 15 & 16 April 2018. Around 11.48 lakhs students have registered to appear in JEE Main 2018 exam, of which approximately 9.2 lakhs will appear in pen & paper based exam, while 2.25 lakhs are expected to appear in the computer-based exam. As JEE Main 2018 is the national level exam, so candidates should be aware of the exam guidelines of JEE Main 2018 which must be followed on the day of entrance test. With the help of JEE Main exam guidelines, aspirants will get to know what to carry to the exam hall & what not to, do’s & dont's, reporting time and other basic details. While appearing for the entrance test, candidates are advised to follow JEE Main exam day instructions and guidelines mentioned on the page to elude any mistakes on the day of the exam. JEE Main Paper 1, Paper 2 will be of 3 hours each. JEE Main Paper 1 will start at 9:30 a.m. while Paper 2 will start at 12:30 p.m.

Some Important JEE Main Exam Guidelines

All the candidates appearing in the exam are suggested to follow these guidelines given on this page.

  • Every candidate appearing in the exam should be very well conversant about the guidelines to be followed on the day of the exam either they have enrolled for an offline or online exam.
  • Remember there is negative marking in the exam so do not mark answers for which you are not sure.
  • The test will commence exactly on the time mentioned in JEE Main admit card and an announcement of this will be made by the invigilator.
  • The ball pens will be provided at the test centres therefore, aspirants should not bring any type of blue/ball pens with them.
  • All calculations/writing work will be done on the rough sheet provided by the exam centre. On the completion of entrance test, the rough sheets must be submitted to the invigilator.
  • Candidates must sign on the attendance sheet at the appropriate place.
  • You will not be allowed to enter the exam hall after 9:30 a.m.

Can the Candidates carry the JEE Question Paper Booklet with them?

  • Candidates are allowed to carry the JEE Main Question Paper Booklet with them for Pen and Paper Based Test.
  • In Computer Based Exam the candidates are provided with rough sheets which they are not allowed to carry with them.
  • JEE Main Answer Key will be released by various coaching institutes on the day of the exam for the Pen and Paper based test so if the candidates are interested to know their expected score before the official answer key are released then they should make sure to get their answer marked on the Question Paper Booklet.

JEE Main 2018 Dress Code


As we all know that JEE Main is the prominent exam of the country. However, the candidates are more concern about the dress code for JEE Main 2018. Well, the CBSE has not specified any dress code for the exam yet, here we are providing some points to keep in mind regarding dress.

  • The candidates should not wear t-shirts with graphics or prints
  • Wear simple t-shirt and jeans
  • The female candidates can wear top/ kurta with leggings
  • The candidates should not wear the sunglasses and the female candidates should not wear any accessories like brooch, bracelets etc.
  • Do not carry any wallets or handbags at the examination centre. 

JEE Main 2018 Instructions for Paper 1 & Paper 2 

JEE Main 2018 Exam for Paper 1 and Paper 2 is scheduled to be conducted on 8 April 2018. The candidates appearing in the exam should follow the instruction to be followed on the day of the exam given below.

Reach the centre soon - Entry Starts at 7 a.m.

The entry to the examination hall will start at 7:00 AM. The candidates are suggested to reach the centre at least 2 hours and 30 minutes prior to the commencement of the exam. JEE Main (Offline) Paper 1 exam will be conducted from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. However, the paper 2 exams will begin at 2:00 PM and will be concluded at 5:00 PM. Things to carry at the examination centre

The candidates at the examination centre have to carry the documents such as Admit Card, Identity proof.The candidates should make sure that they have all the documents with them before entering into the exam centre else the entry of the candidates in the examination centre may get restricted. Also, the candidates with diabetes condition are allowed to carry the eatables like sugar tablets/ fruits and transparent water bottle into the examination hall. For JEE Paper 2, candidates are advised to bring their own geometry box set, pencils, erasers and colour pencils or crayons.

Things not to carry in the examination centre

The candidates are not allowed to carry any text materials, calculators, Slide Rules, Log Tables, Mobile Phones or any other electronic items in the examination centre. As said that candidates can carry the fruits or sugar tablets to the exam centre. However, they are not allowed to carry packed foods like chocolates/candies/sandwich etc. Smoking and eating is strictly prohibited for

Check Admit Card

The candidates should check their Name, Paper, Date of Birth, Gender, Name of the Test Centre, State Code etc. In case of any discrepancy, the candidates should communicate to JEE (Main) Secretariat immediately for necessary action. Admit Card has to be shown to the invigilator at the examination centre.

Do not read the instructions hurriedly. Take time and read it.

Fill the details such as Name, Roll number etc. correctly in the test booklet and answer sheet.

Do not attempt the questions if you are not sure else it will lead you to the negative marking

The candidates should attempt easy questions first.

Do not spend too much time on one question.

Ensure once before marking the final answer in the OMR Sheet of JEE Main

JEE Main 2018 Exam Guidelines for Pen & Paper-based test

  • Time Schedule for JEE Main Pen and Paper Based Examination

Candidates can check the time schedule which must be followed during JEE Main exam day from the table below.

Five minutes before the commencement of entrance test, aspirants will be allowed to break the seal of the test booklet. They must take out the answer key carefully. It must be ensured that test-booklet code must be printed on side-2 of the answer sheet is same as printed on the test booklet. In case of discrepancy, candidates must immediately report to the invigilator for replacement of both test booklet and answer sheet.

  • Aspirants have to use Blue/Black ball point pens to fill the particulars on both sides of the answer sheet. Use of pencils is strictly prohibited. The answer sheet marked with pencils will be rejected and no communications will be entertained.
  • During the examination time, the invigilator will check the admit card of the candidate for verification purpose.
  • The ball pens will be provided to aspirants in the examination hall. Thus, it is not required to carry pens.
  • A signal will be given at the time of the beginning of the exam and at half-time. A signal will also be given before conclusion of entrance test when the candidate must stop marking the answers.
  • Candidates must check the number of pages test-booklet contains and check whether the number of pages mentioned at the top of the test-booklet is same. In case of any discrepancy, aspirants must inform the invigilator.
  • Students must sign on the attendance sheet twice, first while commencing the paper and second while handling the answer sheet to the invigilator. Candidates are also required to put their left-hand thumb impression on the designated space provided on the attendance sheet.
  • All aspirants must follow the rules and regulations of the board with regard to their conduct of entrance examination. Anyone found indulged in any unfair means will be dealt with strict action.

JEE Main 2018 Exam Guidelines for Computer Based Test

The Computer Based Test (CBT) is conducted using the Local Area Network (LAN) so that the exam procedure is hassle-free. CBT is the most secure test as it has very less human interference. The computer-based exam will be conducted on 15 & 16 April 2018. Most of JEE Main exam day guidelines for the computer-based test are same as pen and paper-based exam. Candidates will be provided with the rough worksheets in the exam centre itself. After the exam gets over the candidates will not be allowed to carry the rough sheet with them.

JEE Main 2018 Exam Guidelines - Code of conduct

  • Candidates must maintain perfect silence in the examination hall. Any kind of disturbance in the examination room will be considered as misbehaviour. If any candidate will be found using unfair means, his/her candidature will be cancelled and he/she will be liable to be debarred for taking the examination either permanently or for a specific period of time.
  • Aspirants should not remove any page(s) from the test-booklet (in case of pen & paper based test. If any candidate found to have removed any page(s) from the test-booklet it will be considered as unfair means and will be liable for strict action.
