About National Science Olympiad

19th National Science Olympiad (NSO) 2016 was conducted by SOF. SOF is a non-profit organisation which conducts various Olympiads throughout the year.

Every year SOF- Science Olympiad conducts four Olympiads

  1. National Cyber Olympiad (NCO)
  2. National Science Olympiad (NSO)
  3. International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) 
  4. International English Olympiad (IEO)

From this year SOF has introduced two more Olympiad as follows:

  1. International Company Secretaries Olympiad (ICSO)
  2. international Sports Knowledge Olympiad (ISKO)

National Science Olympiad (NSO) 2016

National Science Olympiad is one of the most prestigious science olympiads in Asia.It gives the Science Quotient (SQ), giving their Score, School Rank, City Rank, State Rank, International Rank and Percentile, as well as a Certificate of Participation.SOF also generates a performance report for all participating schools, known as School Science Quotient (SSQ).

  • NSO 2016 Exam Date: November 15 & 24, 2016, as per the dates are chosen by the school.

In 2013-14 27,000 schools participated in various Olympiads conducted by SOF and students from close to 1350 cities and 16 countries participated.In 2014-15, 31,500 schools participated in various Olympiads and students in more than 1400 cities participated in it.

  • Minimum of 10 students need to be registered from each school for feasibility reasons.
  • Students should be registered through the schools only. Individual registration by the student is not accepted by SOF for Science Olympiad Participation.

All students scoring 100% marks in the 2nd level exams of NSO will win special awards consisting of Gifts worth Rs.1000/ and Merit Certificates.

National Science Olympiad, NSO 1st Level Exam Awards

  • Top ten rank holders from each class for NSO Exam will be awarded Gold medals & Merit Certificate.
  • This will be applicable for winners from 20 Zones/States for performance in the 1st level Olympiads.

General Notes for the Awards:

  • Each winner will be entitled to one award for an exam.
  • Thus, the international top 3 rank holders will be entitled to awards based on their International ranks.
  • Awards accruing to them for State ranks will be given to the next rank holder.

Other Benefits to the Students participating in National Science Olympiad

  • Certificate of Participation to all students.
  • Certificate of merit to all 2nd level qualifiers
  • All students participating in NSO (1st level) get a Science Quotient (SQ), giving their Score, School Rank, City Rank, State Rank, International Rank and Percentile.
  • The respective school of each student with International Rank from 1 - 3 (both inclusive) is awarded a Science Intellect Trophy (SIT) for having the winning students on their rolls.

Application process of National Science Olympiad (NSO)

  • National Science Olympiad is open to the students of classes 1 to 12 and registrations are received from the schools in the prescribed pro-forma.
  • Registration sheet for the school / students and the information booklet are posted to the schools all over India and abroad.
  • The school's coordinating teacher will be generating the students' Roll Numbers as per the guidelines given.
  • A copy of these roll numbers along with the students' registration and school registration sheet should be sent to the Foundation's office before August 31, 2016

Registration Fees for National Science Olympiad

  • A participation fee of Rs. 120 is charged from each student. The School shall retain Rs. 20 per student per olympiad for its expenses as exam centre.
  • Mode of payment of Fees- The school can make the payment via Demand Draft or through NEFT/ RTGS
    • Demand Draft : It should be made in favour of Science Olympaid Foundation payable at New Delhi

National Science Olympiad Selection Process

  • National Science Olympiad is conducted in two levels: Level 1 and  Level 2.
  • Top 500 international ranks and top 10 state rank in NSO stage 1 are eligible for level 2 exam

NSO Level 1: The first level of National Science Olympiad is organised in the respective schools of the participants during the school hours.

  • The level 1 competition is a written objective type test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35/50 objective type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1 to class 12.
  • The question paper consists of Science and Mental Ability section.
  • There are separate question papers for each class.
  • The medium of the test is English.  
  • CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabus is followed for setting the test papers.
  • The exam is conducted during school hours.

NSO Level 2: The qualifiers to the second round would include the following:

  • Top 5% of candidates classwise who appear for the 1st level National Science Olympiad.
  • Due weightage to marks scored in different sections will be given. Each section is accorded separate weightage.
  • Statewide top 10 rank holders were classwise.
  • Class topper where at least ten students from a class appear in the exam & score 75% qualifying marks.

19th NSO 1st Level Cut off Marks 2016


The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) has released the 19th NSO Cut-off marks on its official website. The cutoff marks given is of top 5% of the 1st level. Candidates are advised to see the table below to check the 19th NSO 1st level cut off marks.

The section wise cutoff for 19th NSO 1st level is given in the table below. Candidates are advised to see the section wise weightage decided for each category in the following table:

NSO Cut off Marks-Important Points to remember

  • The student scoring total cut off marks or more will qualify for the second level NSO.
  • In case two or more students achieve same total marks, higher weightage will be given to M3, M2 and M1 sections respectively to determine ranks and 2nd level qualifications.
  • In addition to above, the following students will also qualify for the 2nd level:
    • Top 25 rank holders from each zone and each class and 
    • Class toppers provided they fulfil the following conditions:
      • Class must have 10 or more participants
      • Class topper has scored 50% or more marks
