About HSEE

HSEE (Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination) is for the admission to the five-year integrated Master of Arts (M.A.) programme at IIT Madras for admission in Integrated MA.The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is an institute of national importance which offers quality education in Humanities, Sciences, Engineering, Management and Technology at UG / PG level. HSEE 2017 Exam will be conducted on April 16, 2017, between 10:00 and 13:00 hours in selected cities throughout India. HSEE Application Process started December 17, 2016, and ended on January 27, 2017. 

HSEE 2017 is for admission into the two following courses, The first two years of the curriculum are common to all students, after which they branch out into one of the two streams

  • Integrated M.A. in Development Studies
  • Integrated M.A. in English Studies 
  • Total Number of Seats: 46 (23 seats in each stream)

HSEE Eligibility criteria

Qualifying Examination

Candidates applying for HSEE 2017 should have either completed or should be appearing in 2017in any one of the following qualifying examinations (QE):

  • The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognised Central / State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi; etc.
  • Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognised Board / University.
  • Final Examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National
    Defence Academy.
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
  • High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University.
  • Any Public School / Board / University Examination in India or in any foreign country
    recognised by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to 10+2 system.
  • Higher Secondary Course (H.S.C.) Vocational Examination.
  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects.

Date of Birth

  • Candidate must be born on or after October 01, 1992 while the candidates belonging to SC/ST/PD category born on or after October 01, 1987 can apply.

Physical Fitness: Every qualified candidate will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner in the prescribed format that will be made available along with the letter of offer of admission

Minimum Qualifying Marks

SC, ST & PD Minimum of 55% marks in aggregate in QE


If any Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of joining.

HSEE Application form and Admit Card

  • All applications will be made through the online process which has begun on December 17, 2016, and will end on January 27, 2017.
  • One applicant can only fill one application form.

STEP 1:  Registration

Supporting Documents:
Candidates have to upload Scanned images of Class 10 and Class 12 Certificate (if available) / Date of Birth Certificate / OBC (NCL) / SC / ST / PwD category certificate (if applicable) should be in jpg/jpeg format only.

STEP 3: Payment of Fees

  • The fees can be paid through the Net Banking / Credit Card / Debit Card / Indian Bank Challan generated online during the application registration process. 
  • Through Indian Bank Challan: Candidate can pay the Application Fee at any branch of the Indian Bank
  • Through Net Banking/Credit Card/Debit Card: Candidate has to select the option to pay the application fee. After successful payment, the candidate will be able to print the acknowledgement page.

Submission of the Application Form

Candidates have to submit the application form ONLINE only, along with the scanned photograph, signature, copies of relevant certificates and payment details of examination fee either through offline mode or through online modes on or before January 27, 2017.

Candidates belonging to OBC (NCL) / SC / ST / PWD are required to submit additionally, a hard copy of the self-attested certificate of respective category / medical certificate as applicable, in the prescribed format so as to reach the address given below, before January 27, 2017.

Documents to be submitted with the HSEE 2017 application form

  • Scanned photograph and signature of the candidate and the Parent/Guardian.
  • Scanned copy of Class 10 Public Examination certificate for Name and proof of date of birth.
  • Scanned copy of Class 12 mark sheet (if already passed 10+2 examination).
  • Scanned copy of category certificate [SC/ST/OBC (NCL)]. OBC (NCL) certificate must have been obtained later June 1, 2015. 
  • Scanned copy of PwD certificate. 

Application Form Status

The candidates can check the status of their application at the HSEE website from February 17, 2017, onwards. Candidates would not be sent any acknowledgement of the application form.

HSEE Exam Centres 2017 

The Entrance Exam will be conducted in following cities

  • Thiruvananthapuram.

A candidate has to give 2 choices for exam centre. Request from a candidate for a change of city/town allotted to him/her will NOT be entertained under any circumstances.

HSEE Admit Card 2017

HSEE  Admit Card: It will be generated online and can be downloaded from 
March 14, 2017 (10 AM) onwards until April 15, 2017 (5 PM) from the HSEE 2017 website. It is a compulsory document to be carried on the day of the exam.

Additionally, the service charges of the Bank will be Rs.30.The examination fee is non-refundable.

The examination fee can be paid via either of the two following modes:

  • Mode 1: Online: Net Banking / Credit Card / Debit Card
  • Mode 2: Offline:  Through the Indian Bank Challan generated during the process of application.

IIT Madras Fee Structure for Integrated MA

Candidates admitted through HSEE 2017 will have to pay the following fees at the time of admission. All fees are subject to vary time to time.

The course fee including the hostel and mess charges for 5 years would be approximately 3 lakh rupees.

HSEE Result and Counselling

  • The ranks/scores or the HSEE Results of the candidates will be available for viewing in the HSEE website on May 9, 2017.
  • RE-GRADING AND RE-TOTALLINGSince the examination is administered through computers, there is no scope for re-grading and re-totaling.

HSEE Rank List

  • HSEE 2017 Rank list will be prepared based on the aggregate marks obtained in HSEE  2017. A common rank list made up of candidates who score at least 50% in HSEE 2017 will be prepared.
  • Separate rank lists will be prepared corresponding to OBC (NCL), SC, ST and PwD categories.
  • Candidates of OBC (NCL) category must score at least 45% in HSEE 2017 examination to be in the OBC rank list.
  • Candidates of SC and ST categories must score at least 25% in the HSEE 2017, to be in their respective rank lists

Seat Allocation

  • Allocations of seats to individual streams will be made based on the academic performance of students (CGPA) during the first three semesters, students' preferences, and availability of seats under each discipline.

HSEE Exam pattern

  • Duration: Three hours duration
  • The language of Question Paper: English.
  • The HSEE 2017 has two parts.

Part I (Computer Based Test) will involve following.

  • Part I consists of objective type multiple choice questions for 2½ hours duration
    (150 Minutes) administered through computer.
  • Part II involves essay writing for 30 Minutes to be written on answer sheet
    distributed to the candidates at the end of Part I.
