About UNDP Climate Change Storytelling Contest

  • UNDP Climate Change Storytelling Contest 2015 gives you a golden chance to write your best climate change story and get an opportunity to join and cover COP 21 in Paris.
  • UNDP story telling contest on climate change aims to contribute to raising public awareness on the negative impacts of climate change on people and communities as well as on the opportunities and solutions seen in actions by individuals and governments in vulnerable developing countries.
  • The contest provides young journalists in developing countries a unique opportunity to contribute to the global debate on climate change in the run-up to COP21, while building their capacit, and providing recognition for excellence.
  • Authors of the top two stories will be funded to attend and cover Climate Conference in paris.
  • The contest was launched on August 27th. The deadline to submit an entry is October 11th 2015,

  • Nationality: People from developing countries are eligible to participate.
  • Age: 35 years or below
  • Candidates who are already engaged in public writing through an official media outlet are eligible.
  • Candidates who have a strong interest in reporting on climate change as a contribution ­– locally and internationally – towards greater public awareness on this critical global topic.
  • Candidates who are eager to seize an opportunity to build their journalistic capacity and contribute to Climate Conference in Paris
  • Have a high standard of Working English

  • Following selection, different stories will be published every day from November 2 to November 29, 2015.
  • The best two stories will be selected from this pool of entries. The two winning journalists will cover the climate conference in Paris.

UNDP Climate Change Storytelling Contest Application Process

On the initial basis candidates have to send an email to media4climate@undp.org indicating their intention to participate.

Once the email is received the interested candidates will be shared relevant information on climate change that could help their coverage.

How to enter?

  • Journalists need to submit a story featuring the impact of climate change in their country and solution(s) that are implemented to reduce emissions or adapt to climate change.
  • Journalists have to submit both their published and unpublished stories.
  • Word Strength: 600/1000 words long and include at least 5 pictures embedded in the text.
  • Application Form: Candidates also need to fill and submit an application form.
  • Type of Document: Candidates can submit the story in word document as attachments. Any supporting documents can be shared in PDF format
  • Journalists will have to provide a scanned copy of the published story in a print media certified by their editor or a link to the online media of the story between August 24 and October 11, 2015

  • Scanned copy of print article certified by editor or link to the online media page attesting of the effective publication of the story
  • Letter from editor confirming the interest and tentative date of publication

Submission

Journalists can submit their entry on a rolling basis between August 27 and October 11, 2015. All documents are to be sent to media4climate@undp.org

UNDP Climate Change Storytelling Contest Selection Process

A selection panel will review all entries and score them according the following criteria:

  • Technical aspects (grammar, style, punctuation, etc.)
  • Substance (accuracy of climate change information)
  • How well the story is told
  • Pictures
  • Dissemination and potential impact on public debate

The Judging System

  • Points-based scoring system has been adopted which allows each entry to receive a maximum of 30 points.
  • Each entry is reviewed by at least two judges. When the two judges have reviewed an entry, UNDP computes the average of the two scores to determine the judges’ overall score.
  • Entries receiving an overall score of 26-30 points receive a “Best in Class” nomination
