About POSCO Visiting Fellowship Program

The POSCO Visiting Fellowship Program is a 1-year programme endowed by POSCO and is intended to promote research activities on Korean topics at the East-West Center. POSCO Visiting Fellowship Program is conducted by POSCO, which is a multinational steel-making company at South Korea.

The Program invites outstanding scholars and policy makers to engage in policy-relevant, contemporary research on political, security, and economic issues in Northeast Asia, as they relate to Korea. POSCO visiting fellows are in residence at the East-West Center for one to two months and undertake research and writing on an agreed topic.

Each year during the period from March 1 through the end of February of the following year, the East-West Center invites four to six visiting fellows.The fellows are required to do following activities:

  • Give one seminar
  • Prepare a high-quality paper to be submitted for publication
  • Join in East-West Center activities. 
  • The Fellow may also be asked to participate in local outreach and public diplomacy activities. 

Areas of Research

  • Issues concerning the two Koreas and Northeast Asia
  • Security issues involving Korea and Northeast Asia
  • Economic and social issues in Korea
  • Political development in South Korea.

  • Nationality: People of All Nationalities are eligible to participate.
  • Age: People of all ages can apply for the fellowship.

POSCO Visiting Fellowship Program Reward

Fellows are provided with a stipend and round-trip economy airfare between their home base and Honolulu.

They are required to give one seminar, prepare a high quality paper to be submitted for publication and join in East-West Center activities. 

The Fellow may also be asked to participate in local outreach and public diplomacy activities.

POSCO Visiting Fellowship Program Application form and Process

To be considered for the fellowship period from 1 March 2017 to 28 February 2018 candidates have to submit their Application by December 31, 2016

Enclosures to be sent

  • A cover letter indicating the research theme or project for which the applicant is applying
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Names of three referees, including full name, title, address, telephone and fax number, and email address.
  • Research proposal of 3 to 5 pages

Specifications of the Research Proposal

  • Setting out the issue or issues they propose to investigate.
  • Their research method.
  • The relationship of the proposed study to ongoing work in the area.
  • How the proposed study can advance regional development and cooperation.
  • The duration of fellowship required, expected time that the applicant can be in residence at the East-West Center.
  • The anticipated publication product.
