About Google Summer of Code

Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a coding program on global level organized by Google for helping & developing students with open source, free software and technology-related organizations to write code and paid stipends to do it during their summer break. Students interested in writing source codes can apply to get exposure to real-world software development and many job opportunities as well. Google Summer of Code is an online programme is organized for both students and mentor organizations to bring up the talented new developers from over 100 countries.

Google Summer of Code is started in 2005 as a complex experiment with a simple goal to bring up the open source developers who are working full time or part time or in Schools/Colleges. The main objectives and the motive of this stipend programme are mentioned below:

  • Get more open source code written and released for the benefit of all.
  • Inspire young developers to begin participating in open source development.
  • Help open source projects identify and bring in new developers.
  • To provide an opportunity to the students to do work related to their academic pursuits during the summer: "flip bits, not burgers."
  • Give students more exposure to real-world software development (for example, distributed development and version control, software licensing issues, and mailing list etiquette).

Google Summer of Code (GSoC) - What are mentoring organizations?

Every year Google enlists the mentoring organizations and those organizations are given a time slot to register themselves. Students can choose those mentoring organizations as per their area of interest and skills of the applicants along with this students can choose from.

  • Firstly, the registrations are welcomed by those mentoring organizations with the projects related to the real-time software development and working on the Open Source Code (Also known as Open Source Organisations).
  • Secondly, the list of the accepted organizations are presented by the GSoC team, and applicants can choose the best organization or projects as per their area of interest and skills. Students after the selection will become the part of the GSoCOpen Source Community. Ideally, they will find the organizations they are enthusiastic to be a part of.
    • Students will have to work individually on each project and the proposals for choosing the mentor organizations are to be submitted to Google, not to the organizations
