Indian Cricket Captain Virat Kohli announces sports scholarship of Rs. 2 crores for the sportspersons across the country. Indian star batsman has joined hands with RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group to launch a sports scholarship for the deserving sportsperson in all over India. Virat Kohli has pledged a minimum of Rs 2 crore per year to fund equipment, training and exposure needs of Olympic & non-Olympic sports person in India.
Virat Kohli said "Initially, we are investing Rs 2 crore but the amount can go up depending upon the performance of the athletes. I wouldn't have been anything without cricket. It has made me what I am today and if I can touch people's lives, it will be a great thing."
Award Function and Selection Process
Virat Kohli Foundation and RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group will jointly organize an award function Indian Sports Honours in Mumbai on 11 November 2017. 4 team sports performances and 20 individual sports performances from 1 August 2016 to 31 July 2017 will be considered for the awards. Selection of the deserving athletes would be jointly done by an advisory council headed by chief badminton coach Pullela Gopichand and the Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI). They will select the athletes after researching the performances of athletes. Information to shortlist the nominees in each category will also be collated by SJFI and Pullela Gopichand.
On the occasion of the announcement of the scholarship, Virat Kohli said that this is the way of giving back to the sports which made me what I am today. Virat Kohli Foundation, Kohli's charitable institution, offering this scholarship with a partnership with the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group and the main aim of the scholarship is to identify and support athletes and award them scholarships. RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group has undertaken an exceptional initiative to promote sports at the grass root level in the country.
