University Grants Commission in the recently held meeting took the decision to soon launch Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Single Girl Child Fellowship to pursue PhD in Science discipline. UGC empowered committee on Basic Scientific Research which is chaired by Anil D Sahasrabudhe, who is also the chairman of All India Council for Technical Education gave nod to the proposal.

The soon to be launched Fellowship Programme is on par with the Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Fellowship for Research in Social Sciences.

Reward: The Girl Child who will be selected under the scheme will be offered Rs 12,400 per month during the first two years and Rs 15,500 per month during the third and fourth year.

No. of beneficiaries: Approximately 300 students will be selected every academic year to be the beneficiary of the fellowship programme

Eligibility Criteria

  • Category: Only Single Girl child irrespective of the category to which they belong is eligible.
  • Academic Qualification: Moreover the child should have taken admission in regular full time PhD programme in any recognized university or institute.
  • Age Limit: Maximum age limit is 40 years for general and 45 year for reserved category like SC, ST, OBC and physically handicapped.

For the year 2015, 44 candidates across the nation have been selected including one from Tamil Nadu, for the award of Dr DS Kothari Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme by the UGC empowered committee on Basic Scientific Research. The committee has rejected applications from 175 candidates, who have applied for this fellowship.
