University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted "heritage" status to 19 institutions across the country in an effort to conserve college campuses which are more than 100 years old. The 19 colleges will be given financial assistance for their improvement and upgradation.
For the improvement of the respective campuses and other academic disciplines the Centre took the decision to grant heritage tags to these Universities/institutions and provide them financial aid of Rs 8-10 crore per annum from the government.
On invitation under the Heritage College Scheme 60 applications for the Heritage Tag were received by the comission, none of them from Delhi. UGC officials said’ Out of the total application that were received, 19 colleges were selected ho will be granted commission. Varied financial assistance will be provided to these colleges and they can use the grants for conservation work of the campus and for specialised courses related to heritage,"

"UGC will also examine 160 fresh proposals which have been sent by various colleges across the country," officials said.
