SC to Hear Plea to Fill 5000 Vacant MBBS & BDS Seats. On October 28, 2016 ( Friday). the Supreme Court will hear a plea regarding the filling of around 5000 vacant MBBS and BDS seats across the country for academic session 2016-17.
Previously a petition filed by Sankalp Trust regarding the issue urged the Supreme Court to fill all seats in all medical and dental colleges by way of centralised counselling and on the basis of NEET ranking of the candidates.
Due to controversies over new rules on allotting seats and admission procedures of medical seats, a very large number of seats have been left vacant, even after beginning the classes. The petition stated that the situation occurred due to the complexities created by the NEET and its late finalisation of fixing the last date of admission procedure, which was September 30, 2016.
Earlier, the apex court ordered for combined counselling for all vacant medical and BDS seats in Maharashtra. The apex court also stated that the admission already made would not get affected because thousands of NEET qualified students got admission in various medical colleges.
