Punjab Government has launched the Chief Minister Scholarship Scheme on 6 June 2017.The scholarship has been launched keeping in mind the meritorious students who cannot afford higher education. Punjab Chief Minister Scholarship Scheme aims to provide students with cheaper and quality technical education. It will benefit the Punjab Domicile meritorious students from the economically weaker section of the society. The scheme will benefit students of government polytechnic and engineering colleges, Maharaja Ranjit Singh University, Bathinda and IKGPTU, Jalandhar.

The scheme was jointly inaugurated by the finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal and technical education minister Charanjit Singh Channi after approval from The Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The minister informed that under the scheme, the students of Punjab would get the fee waiver as per the percentage of marks obtained in Class 10.

Benefits Under the Scheme

According to him fee waiver will be given to the eligible students according to the following mentioned criteria

  • 70% fee waiver will be for the students scoring 60 to 70% marks
  • 80% fee waiver for students scoring 70 to 80% marks
  • 90% fee waiver for students scoring 80 to 90% marks
  • Full Fee waiver will be given to the students scoring 90 to 100% marks

According to Channi factor responsible for the low admissions in the government colleges was that the fee structure of private and government colleges was same. This scheme is expected to decrease the no. of students who drop out of schools after Class 10 and 12 due to lack of funds for higher education. It would also increase the students opting for technical courses in Punjab that would help in improving the state’s research and development.

Related News: There is also a news that the Private colleges in Punjab have taken a decision not to enrol students under the Centrally Sponsored Post Matric Scholarship scheme as the Punjab Government has failed to make payment against the scholarship offered to the colleges.

The Technical Education Minister also added that the entire infrastructure of all government polytechnic and engineering colleges is being revamped under which building infrastructure, labs and other equipment would be upgraded and modernised.
