About NMMS

NMMS 2017- National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is a Centrally Sponsored Scholarship scheme which is being offered to meritorious students of economically weaker sections to continue the study at the secondary stage to arrest the dropout rate after Class 8. The selected students are awarded Rs.6,000 per annum (Rs.500 per month) to study from Class 9 to Class 12 in Government, Government aided and local body schools. Under NMMS Total Scholarships awarded are 100,000 and there is a quota of scholarships for different states/UTs. There is reservation as per State Government norms. Every state has its own deadline for NMMS Application Form but for most of the states, the deadline for application is 31 August 2017.

  • The students are selected on the basis of NMMS Exam conducted by the State Governments/UT administration. NMMS Exam 2017 is scheduled to be conducted on 5 November 2017.
  • There is no Stage 2 of NMMS Exam and State Government will select the students for award of scholarship.
  • State wise NMMS Scholarship Application Form is given below and students can download them. Scholarships are disbursed by the State Bank of India directly into the accounts of students on a quarterly basis. The Scholarship is paid for a maximum period of four years.

  • State Council of Educational Research & Training, Chhattisgarh has released the notification regarding the examination roll number issue. The notification is attached below.

NTSE notification

  • Those candidates who have received an email as "rejected with unlock" are suggested to edit their online application for correction and upload the same with correct documents on or before 12 September 2017.
  • Karnataka NMMS Application Form is available in concerned block education office from 28 August 2017. The application can be filled and submitted until 21 September 2017. The application form will not be available on the official website of DSERT.

How is the Scholarship for the States/UT's fixed?

The scholarship for the States/UT’s is fixed in a below-mentioned way:

  • 2/3rdweightage is given to enrollment of students in classes 7 and 8
    • No. of students who took admission in classes 7 and 8
  • 1/3rdwightage is given to population of children of relative age group for class 7 and 8
    •  based on the population figures as per 2001 census.

NMMS Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Eligibility for NMMS- Candidate belonging to General Category must have secured 55% marks in Class 8. (5% relaxation in case of reserved category)
  • Annual Parental Income: It should not exceed Rs. 1,50,000 for both the parents and including income from all sources.
A Candidate is eligible for the NMMS provided he/she :
  • Starts his/her studies in approved courses and takes up studies on a regular basis.
  • Maintains good conduct as certified by the Head of the College/Institution and continues his/her studies as a regular student in Government/Local Body/Government aided school.
  • Does not remain absent on a stretch without proper leave.
  • Does not apply for any job during the study period.


  • The Scholarship is not available if the candidate wants to study Abroad
  • No claim for scholarship arrears will be entertained after the expiry of 12 months.
  • No Scholarship amount will be paid if in case the candidate leaves their course of study within one month of registration/admission
  • In case the candidate is not able to appear at the annual examination due to serious illness, they have to send the medical certificate through the Head of the Institution within three months of one’s falling ill.
  • Within 3 months of the declaration of the result, candidates have to join the next class/desired course
The scholarship shall be deemed to be discontinued any gap of one academic session in studies at any time due to any reason.

NMMS Reward

  • 100,000 scholarships will be given to the selected meritorious students of the country.
  • The amount of scholarship is proposed to be Rs.6000 per annum @ Rs. 500 per month. 
  • Candidates will be paid the Scholarship Amount on a quarterly basis. Rs. 1500 each quarter will be transferred by SBI in Joint account of the candidate.

NMMS Application form and Process

  • Students can apply for the NMMSS 2017-18 by following the link given on this page below. The candidates should know that the candidates are suggested to fill the application form on or before the due date.
  • The NMMS Application Form has to be sent in triplicate on an A-4 Size Paper. The completed application form duly signed by Principal of the school should be submitted to the State Liaison Officer before the last date. 
  • Make sure to attach the attested copy of Caste Certificate/ Category Certificate issued by the competent authority.

Note: The last date to fill the application form for all the NMMS State is same which is 31 August 2017. The candidates are suggested to fill the form on or before the due date.

NMMS Selection Process

Each State/UT will conduct their own test for selection of students but it is mandatory for students to pass both the tests i.e. MAT and SAT with at least 40% marks in each. For the reserved category, this cut off will be 32% marks. The State Level Examination may consist of the following two tests.

  • Mental Ability Test (MAT)
  • Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

Mental Ability Test: Questions will be based on verbal and non-verbal meta-cognitive abilities like reasoning and critical thinking. The questions in the scholarship test may be on analogy, classification, numerical series, pattern perception, hidden figures etc.

Scholastic Aptitude Test: Questions will be based on science, social studies and mathematics as taught in classes VII and VIII.

  • Duration of the Test: 90 minutes Each
  • No. of Questions: 90 Each
  • Marks: 90 Each
  • Each question carries one mark. No negative marking
  • Candidates have to mark their answer using PEN only
  • Extra time will be given to the candidate with physical disabilities.
