About International Essay Contest for young people by UNESCO

UNESCO International Essay Contest for Young People is conducted by UNESCO along with Goi Peace Foundation. UNESCO which was started 71 years ago to build peace of mind is now celebrating its 72 anniversary in 2017  This annual essay contest is organised in an effort to harness the energy, imagination and initiative of the world’s youth in promoting a culture of peace and sustainable development.It aims to inspire society to learn from the young minds and to think about how each of us can make a difference in the world.

The Theme of the essay is "Learning From Nature".
Modern civilisation has developed through controlling nature and exploiting its resources. At the same time, we human beings are part of the natural world, and nature has many things to teach us. Scientists, philosophers, poets, and artists have all found inspiration in nature. What can we learn from nature, and how can we make use of that learning for the future? Please describe your ideas, including your own observations and experiences.

1st prize winner will be invited to Tokyo, Japan to receive the award which will be sponsored by the organisers.

International Essay Contest for young people by UNESCO Reward

The following awards will be given in the Children’s category and Youth category respectively for the International Essay Writing Competition

  • 1st Prize: Certificate and prize of 100,000 Yen (approx. US$870 as of February 2017) (1 entrants)
  • 2nd Prize: Certificate and prize of 50,000 Yen (approx. US$435 as of February 2017) (2 entrants)
  • 3rd Prize: Certificate and gift (5 entrants)
  • Honorable Mention: Certificate and gift (25 entrants)

First Prize Winners wins a trip to Tokyo

  • 1st prize winners will be invited to attend the award ceremony in Tokyo, Japan on 25 November 2017.The trip will be sponsored by the organisers.
  • Additional awards will also be given if applicable:
    • Recognition of effort
    • Best school award
    • School incentive award

International Essay Contest for young people by UNESCO Application form and Process

UNESCO Essay Writing Contest 2017 can be done by two ways that is through Individual Registration and through School/ Organization. The guidelines for writing the Essay and the ways to submit the Essay has been described below:

Guidelines for Writing the Essay

  • Essays must be 700 words or less in English, French, Spanish or German; or 1600 characters or less in Japanese excluding the title.
  • The essay file must be in MS Word or PDF format. The essays may be typed or printed.

  • Cover Page: Essays must have a cover page indicating:
    1. Category (Children or Youth)
    2. Essay title
    3. Participant's name
    4. Address
    5. Phone number, E-mail
    6. Nationality
    7. Age as of June 15, 2017
    8. Gender
    9. School name (if applicable)
    10. Word count.
  • Essays must be original and unpublished. Essays must not be co-authored. It should have been written by a single person. Publishing rights of the essay will be assigned to the organisers.

Offline Submission: Teachers and youth directors or an individual may submit a collection of essays from their class or group. Please enclose a list of participants’ names, ages and the name and contact information of the submitting teacher or director. Entries may be submitted by postal mail to the following address.

  • UNESCO Essay Competition Result: All prize winners will be announced in 31 October 2017 on the Goi Peace Foundation web site www.goipeace.or.jp.
  • Certificates and gifts will be mailed to the winners in 25 November 2017.
