About GATE 2019

GATE 2019 is an engineering entrance exam for postgraduate admission. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has released Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2019 Dates. IIT Madras will be conducting GATE 2019 in a computer-based mode on 2, 3, 9 and 10 February 2019.

The GATE application form or GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) will be available from 1 September 2018. The application process of GATE 2018 will conclude on 21 September 2018. Candidates who have successfully applied for the test will be able to download GATE admit card 2018 from 4 January 2018.

GATE 2019 exam will be held for admission to the M.E., M.Tech and PhD programmes of the IITs, IISc, NITs, CFTIs and other universities of India. GATE score 2019 will also be accepted by various PSUs for recruitment.

GATE 2019 Registration

The eligible candidates can fill and submit the GATE Registration Form 2019  only through online mode using GOAPS (GATE Online Application Processing System). The candidates can submit the online application form on the official website at website https://appsgate.iitg.ac.in or can click the link given on this page. The candidates can submit the online application form 1 September to 5 October 2017. To fill the GATE Registration Form, the candidates have to follow the instruction mentioned below:

Steps to Fill GATE Registration Form 2019

  • STEP 1: Before filling the online application form, the candidates have to keep the ready scanned copy of the photograph, signature, certificate of qualifying degree, category certificate.
  • STEP 2: Now the candidates have to visit GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) directly or by clicking the link given on this page. The candidates have to now register themselves by providing some basic personal details, contact details such as e-mail address and mobile number.
  • STEP 3: After completion of registration process, each candidate will be provided with an enrollment ID and the candidates have to choose a password during the enrollment process.
  • STEP 4: Now, the candidates have to fill the online application form only at GOASP by entering their Personal information, contact details, address for communication, educational qualification details, college name & address, selection of GATE paper & GATE examination cities.
  • STEP 5: Thereafter, the candidates have to upload scanned image of photograph and signature, Eligibility Certificate, category certificate (if applicable) PWD certificate in PDF format. Thereafter, the candidates have to enter the details of valid Identity Document (ID).
  • STEP 6: Now the candidates have to make payment of the application fee through the electronic mode of making a payment such as net banking, credit card or debit card.

Application Submission

The eligible candidates can fill and submit the GATE application form only through online mode on GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). The candidates can visit GOAPS directly of by clicking the link given on this page. GATE 2019 application form must be submitted before 5 October 2017. The candidates are advised to take a print out of filled application form for future references.

Documents required for GATE Registration Form Submission

  • High quality image of candidate’s photograph conforming to the requirements specified
  • Good quality image of candidate’s signature conforming to the requirements specified
  • Scanned copy of the Eligibility Certificate in pdf format (Degree Certificate or Provisional Certificate or Certificate from the Head of the Department/ Institute  
  • Scanned copy of Category (SC/ST) certificate (if applicable) in pdf format
  • Scanned copy of PwD Certificate (if applicable) in pdf format
  • Scanned copy of Dyslexia Certificate (if applicable) in pdf format
  • Details of the valid Identity Document (ID) (The same ID, in original, should be carried to the examination hall)
  • Net-banking/debit card/credit card details for fee payment
  • *Valid Identity Document: Passport/ PAN card/ Voter ID/ Aadhaar-UID/ College ID/ Employee ID/ Driving License

GATE 2019 - Uses of GATE Score


The candidates qualifying the GATE Examination are eligible for the financial assistance and the admission to the courses listed below:

  • Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture
  • Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Science, in the institutions supported by the MHRD and other Government agencies
  • Colleges and institutions, which admit students without MHRD scholarship/assistantship, the GATE qualification is mandatory.
  • Many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have been using the GATE score in their recruitment process.

GATE Eligibility criteria 2019 for students outside India

Such candidates must fulfil the below-mentioned criteria to participate in GATE 2019:

  • Candidate must have completed or is in the final year of their Bachelor’s degree (duration: at least 4 years) in Engineering/Technology.
  • Candidate must have completed or is in the final year of their Post Graduate (Master's) degree (duration: at least 2 years) in any relevant subjects in science.

GATE Eligibility -  Document required

Following are the documents required in support of eligibility criteria

  • If the candidate has passed the qualifying exam in 2018 or earlier, the provisional certificate/degree certificate/course completion certificate/membership certificate/professional certificate issued by the Society or Institute is to be uploaded.
  • If the candidate is expected to complete one of the eligibility criteria then, Certificate from the Institute/Head of the Department or a copy of mark sheet for Section A of AMIE with the signature and seal of the Head of Institute/Department with current date is to be uploaded.

The above-mentioned documents are to be uploaded online only and not to be sent through post.

GATE Admit Card 2019

The candidates, who have successfully submitted the online application under the deadline of filling the application form, will only be able to download admit card on the official website of GATE. The candidates will not be dispatched by post to the candidates. The candidates have to appear in the GATE examination centre as per the date is given in the GATE Admit Card.

GATE 2019 Result and Counselling

The candidates will be selected for scholarship on the basis of their performance in the GATE 2019 exam which is scheduled to be held on 3, 4 10 & 11 February 2019. After the exam, GATE2019 answer keys for various papers will be released on the official website of GATE. The candidates, who have any contests on the released GATE answer key 2019, will have to submit their contests within a limited time period.

After final evaluation of examination papers, GATE 2019 result will be announced on the official website and the scorecard of the qualified candidates will be made available from GOAPS. The marks obtained by the candidates will be considered as GATE 2019 score and it will be converted to Normalized marks for that particular subject for multi-session papers. The GATE score card is valid for 3 years from the date of result announcement.

The GATE2019 Score card will be available online mode and can be downloaded from 20 March 2019 to 31 May 2018, In case, the candidates fails to download the soft copy of the scores after 31 May 2017, He/She can opt for the soft copy of the GATE2019 Score card by paying Rs 500 until 31 December 2019. There is no provision for the issue of hard copies of the GATE Scorecards. GATE 2019 Exam pattern

The candidates appearing in the GATE 2019 exam will have to follow the exam pattern given below:

  • Date of Exam:  2, 3, 9 & 10 February 2019
  • Duration of Exam: 3 Hours
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Total Questions: 65
  • Negative marking: Yes, 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer
  • Marking Scheme: Each question carries 1 or 2 marks
  • Type of Question: Multiple choice questions (MCQ)
  • Questions of General Aptitude (GA) GA questions carry 15 marks. The GA section includes 5 questions carrying 1-mark each and 5 questions carrying 2-marks each.
  • Question Papers other than GG, XE and XL These papers would contain 25 questions carrying 1-mark each and 30 questions carrying 2-marks each and will consist of both the MCQ and NAT Questions.

GATE Exam Pattern for GG (Geology and Geophysics)

  • GG (Geology and Geophysics) Paper GG question paper consists of two parts: Part A and Part B.
  • Part A is compulsory for all the candidates.
  • Part B contains two sections: Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geophysics).
  • Candidates will have to attempt questions in Part A and questions in either Section 1 or Section 2 of Part B. 

Part A consists of 25 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 25 marks and some of these may be numerical answer type questions). Either section of Part B (Section 1 and Section 2) consists of 30 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 60 marks and some of these may be numerical answer type questions).

GATE Exam Pattern - XE (Engineering Sciences)

Candidate has to answer the following in the XE paper:

  • GA – General Aptitude that carries a total of 15 marks.
  • Section A – Engineering Mathematics: This section is compulsory and contains 11 questions carrying 15 marks: 7 questions carrying 1-mark each, and 4 questions carrying 2-marks each.
  • Any two of XE Sections B to H: The choice of two sections from B to H can be made during the exam only. At a time, only two optional sections can be answered. A candidate must first deselect one of the previously chosen optional sections (B to H) to change the examination to another optional section midway of the examination to another optional section. Each of the optional sections of the XE paper (Sections B through H) contains 22 questions carrying a total of 35 marks: 9 questions carrying 1-mark each and 13 questions carrying 2-marks each. Some questions may be of numerical answer type.

GATE Exam Pattern XL Paper (Life Sciences)

A candidate appearing in the XL paper has to answer the following:

  • GAGeneral Aptitude carrying 15 marks
  • Section P – Chemistry: This section is compulsory contains 15 questions carrying a total of 25 marks: 5 questions carrying 1-mark each and 10 questions carrying 2-marks each.
  • Any two of XL Sections Q to U: The choice of two sections from Q to U can be made during the examination. At a time, only two optional sections can be answered. A candidate must first deselect one of the previously chosen optional sections (Q to U) to change midway of the examination to another optional section. Each of the optional sections of the XL paper (Sections Q through U) contains 20 questions carrying a total of 30 marks: 10 questions carrying 1-mark each and 10 questions carrying 2-marks each.
