About Navodaya Vidyalaya Admission (NVS)

Navodaya Vidyalaya Admission 2019-20 will be based on the scores of a written entrance exam known as JNVST Exam. Jawaharlal Navodya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) is conducted by Navodya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), which was established to promote education among the deprived sections of the society and to provide excellent educational opportunities to students of rural areas. Students have to qualify the JNVST exam to take admission in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. 

Navodaya Vidyalaya Admission Form was available from July 2019. Students seeking Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya admission can apply before the due date. The last date to apply for Navodaya Vidyalaya Admission is 30 September 2019. Students will have to appear for entrance exam known as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test which is conducted in February for Summer bound JNVs, in April for Winter Bound JNVs and in June for Extreme Winter Bound JNVs. Last year, JNVST was conducted on 21 April for all JNVs (summer, winter, and extreme winter bound).

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Highlights

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya was started by Government of India in accordance with the National Policy of Education (1986), and today Navodaya school is spread in 28 states and 7 union territories. 

  • JNVs are co-educational residential schools and are affiliated to CBSE Board. JNV offers free of cost education to Class 6 to 12 including boarding, lodging, uniforms, and textbooks to the children belonging to SC/ST, Girls,  and Physically Handicapped and from the families whose income is below the poverty line.
  • There are in all 661 JNVs sanctioned in the country and out of that 626 are functioning.
  • JNVs are focused towards offering good quality modern education including a strong component of culture, inculcation of values, awareness of the environment, adventure activities and physical education to the talented children predominantly from rural areas.
  • The JNVST is conducted in 21 languages and shortlisting of candidates depended upon the marks obtained by them in the selection test. Only students from the district where JNVs has been opened are eligible to appear for the JNV selection test. JNV Selection Test will be held on three dates in various states
  •  JNVST Exam is conducted on 3 different dates for different states. The JNVs are categorized into: summer, winter, and extreme winter bound JNVs depending on the states.

Navodaya Vidyalaya Admission Eligibility

Gender: Both Boys and Girls can apply. No separate reservation for transgender category candidates is provided and they will be included in Boys category for reservation purpose, under various sub-categories viz Rural, Urban, SC, ST and Divyang

Educational Qualification

  • Passed Class 5: Students appearing for the test should have completed class 5 successfully from any of the government/Govt. aided school or any other recognized schools/schools under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan/’B’ Certificate Competency Course of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Students who have passed class 5 are eligible for JNVST Exam
    • The student should have been admitted/ promoted to Class 5 before 15 September 2019.
  • NIOS Students Eligibility - Candidates who will be passing ‘B’ certificate competency course of National Institute of Open Schooling on or before 30 September 2019 are also eligible to write admission test provided they are in the prescribed age group.
  • Geographical Limits: Applicants should be from the districts where JNVs are already opened. 
  • Age Limit: Applicant must be within the age group of 9-13 years that is should be born between 1 May 2007 and 30 April 2011 (This criterion is applicable for all the candidates including SC/ST Students.

Not Eligible for JNVST

  • A candidate who has not been promoted to class 5 before 30 September 2019 is not eligible to take the JNVST Test.
  • Appeared in JNVST in previous years: A candidate who has already appeared for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection test in previous years.

Navodaya Vidyalaya Admission (NVS) Application form and Process

Students who wish to take Navodaya Vidyalaya Admission can apply and fill the Navodaya Vidyalaya application form 2019. The candidates may approach the common service centre along with the duly filled in certificates. The format of a certificate is attached towards the end of this page. The candidates/ parents need to download the certificate and duly filled it mentioning the correct information.

After filling up the certificate, they need to visit the Common Service Centre along with the duly filled in the certificate from the Headmaster of the school where the students were studying in Class 5.  The Common Service Centre charges Rs 35 per candidate to be paid by the parent/ candidate towards the service charge to fill the Navodaya Vidyalaya Application Form on behalf of candidates.

  • Candidates have to send the duly filled application forms to Block Education Officer before the due date.
  • Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Admission form 2019 shall be signed by the Head of the recognized school/ Special Education Scheme (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) where the child is studying in his/her previous classes.
  • The candidate should take the acknowledgement of BEO on submission of the completed admission form.

Navodaya Vidyalaya Admit Card 2019

Students who are applying for Navodaya Vidyalaya admission and appearing for JNVST test can download the admit card for JNVST exam here. The Navodaya Vidyalaya Admit Card admit card 2019 can be downloaded from the offices of Common Service Centres. Each candidate shall appear for the selection test at the examination centre allotted to him/her as indicated on NVS Admit Card 2019.

No request for change of test centre will be entertained, and student cannot appear for Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test without admit card. The link to download the admit card will be available on this page when released.

JNVST Exam Pattern

The selection test will be of two-hour duration and will have three sections with only objective type questions. There are 100 questions in all of 100 marks. Each question carries one mark.

  • There will be objective type questions, and each question will have four options.
  • One mark will be given for every correct answer.
  • There is no negative marking for the wrong answers.

Medium of Examination: The exam will be conducted in 21 languages such as Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, English, Garo, Gujarati,Hindi, Kannada, Khasi, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Mizo, Oriya, Punjabi, Sindhi (Arabic), Sindhi (Devnagri), Tamil, Telegu, Urdu and Nepali.

How to attempt JNVST 2019?

  • The answer sheet will be of intelligence Character Recognition (ICR)/Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Sheet. Students will receive a specimen of answer sheet enclosed with the prospectus cum application form.
  • Only Blue/Black Ball Point Pen is to be used to write on the answer sheet. Use of pencil is strictly prohibited.
  • No change in the answer once written is allowed. Overwriting, cutting and erasing on the Answer Sheet is also not allowed.

Navodaya Vidyalaya Result 2019 for JNVST exam for Class 6 will be declared in the 1st week of April/May 2019 for Summer Bound, last week of May 2019 for Winter Bound & 1st week of July 2019 for Extreme Winter Bound JNVs of the year of admission. Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection & Admission

Students seeking admission in Navodaya Vidyalayas can check the selection details below.

  • Students will be shortlisted based on the marks obtained in the JNV selection test.
  • Securing qualifying marks in each of the subjects is essential. 
  • Each Navodaya will admit a maximum of 80 students for class 6 selected from the selection test.

Navodya Vidyalaya Admission 2019-20: Documents Required

The parents of the children who qualify the JNV Selection Test for Navodya Vidyalaya Admission will have to submit following documents at the time of admission:

  • Affidavit/Residence Certificate in prescribed proforma in addition to other documents demanded by the concerned Vidyalaya.
  • For candidates seeking admission under rural quota, the parents will have to submit an affidavit to the effect that the child is studying in an Institute located in a notified rural area and that they are residing in a notified rural area.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya(JNV) Reservation of Seats 2019-20

Students from rural areas: Candidates selected from rural areas fill at least 75% of the seats in a district, and remaining seats are filled from urban areas of the district.

SC/ ST: Reservation of seats in favour of children belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes is provided in proportion to their population in the concerned district.

 Reservation will be less than the national average (15% for SC and 7.5% for ST) but subject to the maximum of 50% for both the categories (SC & ST) taken together. These reservations are interchangeable and over and above the candidates selected under open merit.

Girls: One-third of the total seats are filled up by girls

Disabled Children: There is a provision for reservation of 3% seats for ** disabled children (i.e. Orthopedically Handicapped, Hearing Impaired and Visually Handicapped).

Navodya Vidyalaya (JNV) Rural Quota Selection Criteria

  • The candidate claiming admission under rural quota must have studied and passed classes 3, 4 and 5 from a Govt. / Govt. aided/recognized school spending one full academic session each year in a school located in a rural area.
  • Candidates passing class 5 from schemes of “Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan” or ‘B’ certificate competency course of National Institute of Open Schooling on or before 30 September 2019  can take the test provided they are in the prescribed age group. DEO/DIOS will verify the forms of such candidates. 
  • The rural status of a child from Accredited Centres/Institute of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan/National Institute of Open Schooling will be decided on the basis of a certificate to be issued by Tehsildar/District Magistrate of the District indicating that the child has been residing in rural areas for the last three years.
  • Students studying under the above scheme from urban and notified areas are not eligible for obtaining seats in rural quota.
  •  Areas remaining than those which are defined in 2001 census or through a subsequent Government Notification will be considered as rural.

JNV Selection of Urban Candidates

A Candidate who has studied in a school located in an urban area even for a single day of session in Class 3, 4 and 5 will be considered as an urban candidate. Urban areas are those who are so defined in 2011 census or through a subsequent Government Notification.
