The HRD ministry has said that the Says single Entrance Test like NEET will not be conducted for engineering admission. The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has ruled out the decision to conduct a NEET like single entrance exam for the engineering admission from the next academic year. The ministry has said that the states will conduct their own separate examinations. However, the HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said that the committee formed by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will submit a report on whether the single entrance exam should be conducted in the future or not.

National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) is an all India undergraduate medical exam conducted by the CBSE for admission in MBBS and BDS program in government and private medical institutions in India. If the single entrance test for engineering students is implemented, it will do away with the practice of multiple entrance examinations conducted by central agencies, state governments, and private institutions in India.

Engineering Exams in India

Official Statements on Single Entrance Test

The government official said that the engineering exams are different than the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) because the engineering exam has an oversupply in the market. In India, there are more than 3,300 approved engineering colleges affiliated to government universities with an annual intake of over 1.6 million students but only half of the total seats are filled each year. A senior official from the government said that the number of institutes and course are more than medical institutes and courses, so in engineering admission, the scenario is totally different.

HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said about the issue that the "issue of single entrance exam is still pending and a committee will submit its recommendations. But no changes will be made next year for sure. So no single entrance exam will be conducted next year. Depending on the recommendation of the committee further decision will be taken."
