Deemed Varsities no longer allowed to use ‘University’ word as per the order passed by the honourable Supreme Court of India. On 3 November 2017, the Supreme Court has passed an order directing all the deemed varsities in India to no more use the word ''University'' in their names. To implement the order within a month, also the University Grants Commission (UGC) has been asked by the Supreme Court of India.

Deemed Varsities no longer allowed to use ‘University’ word decision made by the Supreme Court has come as a major blow for many deemed varsities in the country. However, the SC further added in the decision that the deemed varsities and institutes are still able to offer degree programs but as per the virtue of Section 23 of the UGC Act, they are not allowed to use the word 'University' in their names. There are total 117 deemed varsities in India and many of them are seeking the status of full-fledged private University.

What Media Report and Lawyer has to say

According to the media report, the Supreme Court was hearing the case of the deemed varsities to start engineering programs through distance mode and award degrees for the same. Ravi Bhardwaj, representative lawyer of deemed universities, did not look satisfied after decision made by the honourable Supreme Court of India.

He said "I wish the Supreme Court while this direction, should have detailed and discussed these provisions of UGC Act, 1956. I am also surprised to note that the Supreme Court feels that the Deemed Universities are unregulated, which is not the case, in fact, they are the most regulated rather controlled segment".

List of Colleges affected by the decision

Total 123 institutes in India would be affected by the decision made by the honourable Supreme Court of India. A complete list of the institutes deemed to be universities released by the government officials is given below:
