AICTE releases the new engineering syllabus for the academic year 2018 - 19. The new syllabus will include big data analytics, artificial intelligence, robotics, and the internet of things for the first year students. AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) has revised the curriculum for the four-year undergraduate programme. And now there will be a mandatory induction program and internships from the next academic session.

The graduating student must have knowledge and skills in the area of his study so that they can serve to the society. For this purpose, the government has introduced this step. According to officials, it took seven years to make this project come from papers in reality.

(This revised syllabus will be adopted by all the colleges affiliated to AICTE.)

Change in Pattern and syllabus of Undergraduate Engineering Program

For the current academic session, there are 200 credits earmarked for the four-year programme. The model curriculum released by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development and AICTE has now reduced the credits to 160 from the next academic session.

New minor engineering disciplines would be introduced for 20 credits, it will be for the benefit of students to acquire additional skill sets. The existing pattern has been changed for the first year from six subjects and two labs with 21 credits to four subjects with 17.5 credits.

What is new in the Revised Curriculum

  • In the revised curriculum, Environmental Sciences, Induction training, Indian Constitution, Essence of Indian Traditional Knowledge will be counted under mandatory subjects with no credit for all the first year students.
  • There will be a compulsory three weeks induction program at par with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
  • This program will include the participation of students in physical activities, creative arts, universal human values, literacy, proficiency, modules, lectures by eminent people and the students will also have to visit the local areas to explore about them.

Why the Curriculum has been revised

The revision of the curriculum has been done to improve the employability rate of the technical graduates by making them proficient with the industry requirement. Moreover, it is also important to help the students to adjust to the new environment and inculcate in them the spirit of the institution with a sense of larger purpose.

That's is why there is a need for this induction program. In the proposed revised curriculum, the theoretical lectures will be reduced from 30 to 20 per week.

One thing will also be added from the next session that now the internship during the summer breaks of second year or third year will be mandatory. Hope this changed syllabus will be helpful for the students making a career in Engineering.
