About NIOS Admission

NIOS Admission 2018 in the National Institute of Open Schooling formerly known as National Open School (NOS) is conducted for students of Class 10, 12. NIOS also Offers Vocational Courses for the students across the country. The Examination and registrations are conducted in two blocks for which the whole admission and examination procedure is described clearly in this page. The registrations for the block 1 has already closed and the last date to register for the Stream 1 and Block 2 NIOS Admission 2018 without late fee is 31 January 2018.

About NIOS: National Institute of Open Schooling is the largest open schooling system in the world comprising for over 5000 study centres with 3,50,000 students enrolled from all over India. NIOS was established in November 1989 as an autonomous organisation by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. 

  • The NIOS is a national board that administers examinations for Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) examinations of open schools similar to the CBSE and the CISCE.

Modes of NIOS Examination

The NIOS Examinations are held in two modes for the candidates round the year. i.e. Public Examinations and On-demand Examinations. Public Examinations are conducted twice a year for all the candidates admitted to National School of Open Learning however, ODES are conducted on the date decided by the candidate as per their convenience.

Public Examinations

  • These exams are open to all students enrolled in NIOS.
  • These exams are conducted twice every year i.e. in April-March and October-November which is also known as Block 1 and Block 2 respectively.
  •  Registration of Public examinations will end on 31 January 2018, for the exams to be conducted on October 2018.

On-Demand Examinations (ODES)

  • Students are given the opportunity to appear for the exam on a day of their choice.
  • They have to enrol with the ODES System to avail this facility.
  • Whenever they want to give the exam, they have to log-in to their online account and select the date.
  • They can appear for the Exam at the Noida Headquarters or at the Regional Centres of NIOS.
  • Overseas candidates can appear from any of the ODE Centres of NIOS.

Students can appear for exams 9 times from the year of their enrolment.

NIOS Admission Application form and Admit Card

NIOS Admission 2018 will be conducted in both Online and Offline Admission Process, applicants will have to apply via online mode by filling the application form in online mode and also in offline mode by downloading and filling the application form using pen and paper for the Admissions to Secondary and Senior Secondary Courses. The admissions of the candidates will be eligible in 4 streams listed below.

  • Stream 1:  For the New Fresh Learners: The dates for Online Admission for stream1 Block 2 is open until 31 January 2018 from the admission session 2018-19.
    • The candidates of this stream will be eligible to appear in the October-November 2018 Secondary/Senior Secondary Public Examinations of NIOS.
  • Stream 2: For Unsuccessful/Failures: The dates for Online Admission for stream 2 are open.
  • Stream 3 : Secondary through On Demand Examination System: The dates for Online Admission for stream 3 throughout the year for the admission session 2018.
  • Stream 4: Sr. Secondary through On Demand Examination System: The dates for Online Admission for stream 4 throughout the year for the admission session 2018.

The applicants can apply to any of the streams based upon their eligibility and availability of the registration dates. Presently the applications are open for the Online Admission in Stream 1 Block 2 for the Examination going to be conducted in October/November 2018. Steps for the NIOS Registration Form


STEP 1:
 Firstly applicants have to register on the online via the link given above for which they will have to register using valid Email ID and Password.

STEP 2: Candidates have to upload their photograph in the columns shown in the right upper corner of the application form.

STEP 3:  the applicants have to start filling the NIOS Application Form with their accurate details as mentioned in the documents proof.

STEP 4: Candidates have to mention correct postal address where I-card, Self Learning Material etc., could be delivered by NIOS.

STEP 5: Once an application is submitted for processing to NIOS, an Acknowledgement Receipt is generated, which will also be sent on the Registered Mail id.

Submission of the NIOS Application Form

Candidates are required to send a print-out of the internet filled in Application Form (not the acknowledgement receipt) along with demand draft in case of payment option and relevant documents at the Registered Office given in the instructions within a 5 Days of registration to NIOS website.

  • Do not forget to mention their names and registration number on the back of the photograph before affixing and also on the back of Bank Draft if the fee is paid through Bank Draft.

Payment of NIOS Registration Fee


Candidates can pay the Application and Registration fee for NIOS Admission 2018 via three of the modes mentioned below:

Mode 1: Online: The fee can be deposited Online through Credit Card (Master or VISA) or Debit Card(VISA Only of the selected bank)

Mode 2: Demand Draft: The fee can be deposited through Bank Draft of any Nationalised Bank of India only in favour of "Secretary, NIOS" payable at respective Regional Centre for all streams. In case of Stream 1 and 2, the demand draft is

  • In Case of Stream 1 and 2, the demand draft is to be payable at Noida Only.
  • In Case of Stream 3 and 4, the Application Fee is to be paid within a week of the candidate's online registration at NIOS.

Mode 3: Through CSCs:  the applicants can also pay via Common Service Centres and the application fee for NIOS admission can be paid via Electronic Wallet of CSCs.

NIOS Admission Result and Counselling

After the successful review of the NIOS Application Form, Admission will be granted by the NIOS by issuing the Identity Card for the students.  After the successful admission to the NIOS the study material is provided to the student in online of offline from i.e. candidates can either download it from the www.nios.ac.in after the successful payment of the material or they can collect it from the regional centre or from Material Distribution Unit MDU, Delhi.

Personal Contact Programme:

  • Up to a maximum of 30 PCP classes would be conducted per subject for Theory and 5 additional for subjects having practicals as per NIOS norms
  • The classes would be conducted generally on weekends and holidays, in
    the first year of admission, by the AIs (Study Centres).

Pass Criteria for NIOS Examination

Secondary Level: 

  • A minimum of 33% marks in the aggregate (Theory plus practical wherever applicable). 
  • The marks obtained in Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA ) will be shown separately in the mark sheet.
  • Pass in 5 subjects including at least one but not more than two languages. 

Senior Secondary Level:

  • A minimum of 33% marks in the aggregate as well as separately in Theory and practise in the public examination.
  • The marks obtained in TMA will be shown separately in the mark sheet.
  • Pass in 5 subjects including at least one but not more than two languages.

The enrolled students at NIOS can opt for the subjects of their choice at the Secondary and Senior Secondary Levels. NIOS Admission Important details

The students enrolled as a learner in the NIOS are eligible for the scholarships and awards based on their merit and need basis. There are two scholarship schemes for the students listed below.

Ms Santosh Rastogi Award for Excellence in Geography

Every year at NIOS 5 awards of Rs 500 Each will be distributed to the students who have scored the highest marks in the geography subject in senior secondary level for both blocks i.e. block 1 and block 2. The best scores in both the examinations will be considered for the candidates to be eligible for the scholarship award.

Dr Ambedkar National Scholarship Scheme for meritorious students belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes  

The Scholarship Scheme is for the SC and ST Students(separately) whose family income is less than Rs 1 Lac. the scholarship scheme for SC/ST Students was started by Dr Ambedkar Foundation set up under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in 1992 with a view to recognising, promote and assist meritorious students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for enabling them to pursue higher studies. This is a one-time cash award and is given to 3 students scoring highest marks in the class 10 level examination conducted by the Education Board/Council.  In case none of the first three eligible students is a girl, the girl student scoring the highest marks gets a special award.
