About Yoga Olympiad 2019

Yoga Olympiad 2019 is being conducted by NCERT to encourage the positive and healthy lifestyle for the physical, the mental and emotional health of children of Indian Schools at National Level. The Yoga Olympiad will be conducted at the 3 levels initially and then the final National Level Olympiad will be conducted. Candidates from All government, government-aided schools are eligible to participate in the Yoga Olympiad. The various levels of the Olympiad are described below. The finalists selected at each level will be sent to the higher level for competing against the other similar level candidates.

  • Block Level
  • District Level
  • State Level
  • National Level

The top three contenders from each of the levels will be given a Prize and a Certificate of Merit. However, The winner of the Yoga Olympiad 2019 at National Level will be given a Gold Plated Medal with a certificate. 

The objective of starting the Yoga Olympiad 2019 is to develop an understanding of practices of yoga and applying the understandings in their life and to develop a healthy habit and lifestyle in children. Yoga helps in the development of strength, stamina, endurance and high energy at the physical level. Therefore, the Yoga Olympiad is being conducted to maintain peace and contentment at the mental level leading to inner and outer harmony.  On this page, the information about the Yoga Olympiad comprises the details about the eligibility criteria, the application process, rewards, selection process etc is given.

Practices to be covered in the Yoga Olympiad 2019

The Yoga Olympiad is the step to keep the students physically and mentally healthy which is initiated by the NCERT. The following practices of Yoga will be covered in the Olympiad

  • Kriya (Cleansing Process)
  • Asanas
  • Pranayama
  • Dhyana (Meditation)
  • Bandha and Mudra (Only for the Secondary level)

Yoga Olympiad Stages

There are two stages for which the Yoga Olympiad will be held in. The Yoga Olympiad will be held in Upper Primary Stage and Secondary Stage for which the details are given below. The Yoga Olympiad will be conducted separately for Boys and Girls.

Upper Primary Stage

  • The first Stage of the Yoga Olympiad is Upper Primary Stage in which the students from Class 6 to Class 8 will participate.
  • The following age group of the students are allowed to participate in the Yoga Olympiad under upper primary stage:
    • 1A: 10 to 14 years Girls
    • 1B: 10 to 14 years Boys

Secondary Stage

  • In the secondary stage, the students from Class 9 to Class 10 will participate.
  • The following age group of the students are allowed to participate in the Yoga Olympiad Age under secondary stage:
    • 2A: 14 to 16 years Girls
    • 2B: 14 to 16 years Boys

All the government and Government-aided Schools are eligible to participate in the Yoga Olympiad. The following organisations will conduct yoga olympiad at their organisation and send their team to the National level directly:

  • Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan 
  • Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti
  • Central Board of Secondary Education

 

Yoga Olympiad 2019 Reward

  • Awards for Yoga Olympiad from School to State/ UT level will be the responsibility of respective State/ UT.
  • However, the States/ UTs are free to choose awards for Yoga Olympiad as per their norms and instructions.
  • States/ UTs are free to opt prizes/ certificate at School/ Block/ District/ State/ UT Level.
  • The first three rank holders will receive the awards according to the distribution stated in the table below.
  • All the other participants will receive the certificate of participation.

Yoga Olympiad 2019 Application form and Process

The invitation for the Yoga Olympiad will be drawn by the schools in which all the government and the government-aided schools are eligible to participate. However, the entries for the National Level Yoga Olympiad are to be sent to the NCERT by 18 May 2019.

Therefore, the candidates willing to participate in Yoga Olympiad need to contact their school authority. This is the responsibility of the school authorities to ensure that the students with special needs have active participation in Yoga Olympiad.

Yoga Olympiad 2019 Selection Process

The selection of the participants will be done by the jury based on the assessment criteria. There will be a team of 3 judges having expertise in Asanas, Pranayama, Kriya, Bandh. The Jury members will be selected to assess the participants from the different institutions, Schools, Yoga institutes throughout the country.

  • Upper primary and secondary stage teams will be assessed separately.
  • Girls and Boys will be assessed separately.

Yoga Olympiad - Evaluation for the upper Primary/ Secondary

The criteria for the selection of the participants will be the same for upper primary/ secondary. However, the postures of different states will be different as per the target group. The postures required by the different target groups are given in the table below.

  • Sitting Posture: Simhasana, Uttana Mundakasana, kukkutasana, Akarna Dhanurasana. Ustrasana, Shashankasana, Bakarasana
  • Prone Posture: Shalabhasana, Dhanurasana, Mayurasana
  • Supine Posture: Sarvangasana, Matsyasana, Sirsasana

 

Yoga Olympiad Selection 2019

  • Block Level: The first level is block level where all the schools can send their entries. From here, four girls and four boys will be selected for the upper primary stage and the similar number of students will be selected from the secondary which will further participate at the next level
  • District Level: The participants who have been selected from the first level will participate at this level and the winner of this level will move to the next level of the Olympiad
  • State/ UT Level: This is the third level of Yoga Olympiad, and only selected winners from district level will participate
  • National Level: This is the final level of Yoga Olympiad where the best of State/ UT entries will exhibit their performance. At this stage, a total of 4 girls and 4 boys of Upper Primary group and a similar number from the second group will participate. In total 16 students from each State/ UT/ KVS/ NVS will participate in this Olympiad.
