About The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award 2016

  • The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award which is considered as one of the world’s most prestigious literary prizes is inviting entries.Entry is open to authors from anywhere in the world, as long as they have a previous record of publication in creative writing in the UK and Ireland. 
  • It is considered as The world's largest award for a single short story as the winner gets £30,000 as the award. It was launched in the year 2009 and is open to only the novelists or short story writers.
  • The story which is being submitted for the award may
    • be unpublished (worldwide)
    • be first published or scheduled for publication after 1 January 2015.
    • Should be of maximum 6000 words
    • Written in English
  • The author can be from any where in the world but must have a record of prior publication in creative writing in the United Kingdom or Ireland. This means the author must previously have had works of prose fiction, drama or poetry published by an established publisher or an established printed magazine in the UK or Ireland, or broadcast by a national radio station in the UK or Ireland.
  • Entries can be sent via e-mail or by post.
  • The past winners of this award have included the Pulitzer prize-winning American writer.

  • The Award is open to authors writing in the English language whose work has been previously published in the English language in the UK or Ireland.
  • Meaning: The author must previously have had works of prose fiction, drama or poetry published by an established publisher or an established printed magazine in the UK or Ireland, or broadcast by a national radio station in the UK or Ireland

Not Eligible to participate

  • The Award is not open to employees of TNL publishers of The Sunday Times and Sunday Times Magazine or any of its associate
  • If the author died prior to 1 January 2015 then his/her entry is not eligible
  • Authors currently serving a term of imprisonment are ineligible for the Award
  • Stories which were previously entered into the Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award

The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award Reward

The winning Entry and the five runners-up will receive the following Reward

  • The First Prize winner Entry will be the “Winner of The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award 2016” and prize is valued at £30,000.
  • Selected five runners-up will receive £1,000 each. The Entry will be “Shortlisted - The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award 2016”
  • Prizes will be awarded as cheques to the winners and runners-up only.

The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award Application Process

Candidates can apply via any one of the two modes discussed below:

Type and format the short story

  • One entry per author
  • Language: Written in English
  • Word Limit: A maximum of 6,000 words
  • Typed
  • Font: Arial, 12pt, black
  • Double spaced
  • No page numbers
  • Include a front page which details the title of story and the word count ONLY. The author's name should not be included in the document.
  • No illustrations
  • Format: .doc or .docx
  • File Name: File should be saved in Microsoft Word document with the author name and short story title

Mode 1: Email Entry

  • Candidates have to  fill the Entry Form Online here
  • Submission by e-mail: Candidates have to submit their story via Email with the author's name and short story title in the subject line to: sundaytimesEFG@booktrust.org.uk

Mode 2: Postal Entry

For applying by post, candidates have to get ELEVEN (11) copies of the typed short story printed on a single sided on white A4 paper

Submission of the Application Form

The duly filled in Application Form along with ELEVEN (11) copies of the typed short story printed on a single sided on white A4 paper has to be sent to the below mentioned address before September 24, 2015:

Important Points

  • The Entry must not contain more than six thousand (6,000) words
  • Entries may be submitted by the author or by his/her publisher or agent with the author’s consent.
  • The story entered must either:
    • unpublished (worldwide)
    • be first published or scheduled for publication after January 1 2015
  • Entries are limited to stories written in English
  • Entries must be submitted in the author’s own name.

The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award Selection Process

  • The team of judges appointed will select a longlist of 20 short stories from which they will select a shortlist of six outstanding short stories submitted for the Award.
  • From the six outstanding Entries, they will select the winning Entry and five runners-up
  • All shortlisted Entries will be contacted personally by email or by telephone. The overall winner will be announced at the Award Ceremony in April 24, 2016.
  • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • The judging will be fair and independent. The judging panel will be appointed by the Award Director in association with The Sunday Times and EFG and will include a representative from The Sunday Times as well as members of the literary community.
