About NMMS 2019

NMMS 2019 - National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is a Centrally Sponsored Scholarship scheme which is being offered to meritorious students of economically weaker sections to continue the study at the secondary stage to arrest the dropout rate after Class 8. The selected students are awarded Rs. 12,000 per annum (Rs.1000 per month) to study from Class 9 to Class 12 in Government, Government aided and local body schools. Under NMMS total Scholarships awarded are 100,000 and there is a quota of scholarships for different states/UTs. There is reservation as per State Government norms. NMMS Exam 2019

National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) is given to the student on the basis of the exam. Each State/UTs will conduct their own NMMS 2019 test for selection of aspirants. NMMS exam includes two tests: Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholarship Ability Test (SAT). Each test of NMMS 2019 scholarship test will contain 90 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and only 180 minutes will be allotted to complete both tests.

  • The NMMS Scholarship exam is conducted in November 2019
  • The students are selected on the basis of the NMMS Exam conducted by the State Governments/UT administration. 
  • There is no Stage 2 of NMMS Exam and State Government will select the students for the award of scholarship.

NMMS Scholarship 2019

NMMS scholarship is given so that students can continue with their studies and they do not leave studies just because of lack of money. The objective of the scholarship is also to bring down the dropout rate of school after class 8. Education is the fundamental right of all the children and this scholarship rightly help those students whose parents are unable to afford the education of their children.

NMMS Scholarship amount has been increased in 2019

Until last year the students of Class 9-12 were given the scholarship of Rs. 500 per month but this year the students will be given the scholarship of Rs. 1000 per month. Total 1 Lac scholarships will be distributed to students across India.

State-wise NMMS Scholarship Application Form is given below and students can download them or apply online as the case may be. Scholarships are disbursed by the State Bank of India directly into the accounts of students on a quarterly basis. The Scholarship is paid for a maximum period of four years.

NMMS 2019 Eligibility Criteria


 Before applying for NMMS Scholarship exam, aspirants need to go through the NMMS eligibility criteria set by the concerned state/UTs.

General NMMS Eligibility Criteria

An aspirant is eligible for the scholarship if he/she:

  • Takes up studies for the approved courses
  • Maintains good performance as certified by the Head of the college/Institution and continues to their studies as a regular student in Government/Local Body/Government Aided School
  • Does not absent himself/herself without proper leave
  • Take up studies on a whole-time basis
  • Does not take up any job

Below are the eligibility conditions which must be fulfilled by aspirants for NMMS 2019 scholarship at the secondary and higher secondary stage

NMMS Academic Eligibility

  • Candidates who get clear promotion from class 7 to 8 are eligible for NMMS scholarship
  • At the time of selection for the NMMS 2019 scholarship award, aspirants must have secured at least 55% (relaxation of 5% for SC/ST) or equivalent grades in class 7 examination

NMMS Income Eligibility

Under this scheme, the annual family income of awardee should not be more than Rs. 1.5 lakhs per annum from all the sources.

Who are not eligible for NMMS Scholarship 2019?

NMMS 2019 scholarship scheme is not eligible who:

  • The students whose parental income is more than Rs. 1,50,000 per annum
  • The students who are planning for Studies abroad for any course
  • Students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and State Government-run residential schools
  • Students in Private school are not entitled to get Scholarship.

NMMS 2019 Reward

  • 100,000 scholarships will be given to the selected meritorious students of the country.
  • The amount of scholarship is proposed to be Rs. 12000 per annum @ Rs. 1000 per month. 
  • Candidates will be paid the Scholarship Amount on a quarterly basis. Rs. 3000 each quarter will be transferred by SBI in the Joint account of the candidate.

How is the NMMS Scholarship for the States/UT's fixed?

The scholarship for the States/UT’s is fixed in a below-mentioned way:

  • 2/3rdweightage is given to enrollment of students in classes 7 and 8
    • No. of students who took admission in classes 7 and 8
  • 1/3rd weightage is given to the population of the children of the relative age group for class 7 and 8 based on the population figures as per 2001 census.

NMMS Scholarship Renewal

NMMS scholarship has to be renewed every year and only candidates who fulfil the renewal eligibility conditions will be eligible for the scholarship.

  • Scholarship for Secondary and Higher Secondary stage or equivalent classes 9 to 11 is payable for the maximum period of 4 years for studies in India only

Conditions for renewal

  • The student should continue to study in the government, govt.-aided or local body school
  • Should secure at least 55% in the annual exam in Class 8 and 9 and 11
  • Should secure at least 60% in the annual exam of Class 10
  • There is a relaxation of 5% for reserved category students
  • The students should get clear promotion from class 9 to 12 in their first attempt

Following points to be taken care of so that scholarship is not discontinued. Scholarship once discontinued on the basis of the rules of disbursement of scholarship cannot be revived back under any circumstances

  • Discontinuation of study: Students who leave his/her course of study within one month of registration/admission, no scholarship will be paid to them
  • Provision of Medical Certificate in case of illness - In case the awardee is not able to appear for annual examination due to serious illness, then one should send the medical certificate to the Head of Institution within three months of one’s falling ill. The duration of illness should be clearly certified by a specialist who is a registered medical practitioner
  • Gap year leads to discontinuation of the scholarship - NMMS scholarship shall be considered to be discontinued if there is a gap of one academic session in studies at any time due to any reason

NMMS 2019 Application form and Process

Students can fill NMMS application form 2019 from the link provided on this page. The application form for NMMS 2019 has been started from 23 July. Candidates are advised to register for NMMS 2019 scholarship test as per the last date for their state or UT.

NMMS application form 2019 has been released by different state/UT authorities. After carefully filling NMMS application form 2019, candidates need to send the triplicate on an A4 size paper. The completed NMMSS 2019 application form must be duly signed by the Principal of the School and after that, it should be submitted to the State Liaison Officer before the last date.

  • PH certificate (if applicable)
  • Passport size photograph (if required)
  • Signature (if required)
  • Make sure to attach the attested copy of Caste Certificate/ Category Certificate issued by the competent authority.

NMMS 2019 Selection Process

Each State/UT will conduct their own test for selection of students but it is mandatory for students to pass both the tests i.e. MAT and SAT with at least 40% marks in each. For the reserved category, this cut off will be 32% marks. The State Level NMMS Scholarship Exam consists of the following two tests.

  • Mental Ability Test (MAT)
  • Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

The NMMS Exam Details

  • Each question carries one mark. No negative marking
  • Candidates have to mark their answer using PEN only
  • Extra time will be given to the candidate with physical disabilities.

The question paper pattern of NMMS will vary from state to state. For e.g. in Himachal Pradesh, there will be 200 questions whereas in West Bengal there are 180 questions in NMMS Exam,

NMMS MAT Exam 2019

The Mental Ability Test of NMMS 2019 will contain 90/100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) testing the verbal and non-verbal meta-cognitive abilities like reasoning and critical thinking. The question in NMMS 2019 MAT exam questions will be asked from

  • Analogy
  • Classification
  • Numerical series
  • Pattern perception
  • Hidden figures etc.

NMMS SAT Exam 2019

The Scholarship Ability Test of NMMSS 2019 contains 100 MCQs covering subjects namely science, social studies and mathematics as taught in classes 7 and 8. The total time allotted to complete the test will be 90 minutes. The questions will be from the following subjects

  • Mathematics
  • Physical Science
  • Life Science
  • History
  • Geography

NMMS Result 2019

The result of NMMS 2019 will be announced as per the dates announced by SCERT of respective states/UTs. Each state will release NMMSS 2019 result in the online mode. For selecting the students, the following conditions will be applied:

  • Students must pass NMMS 2019 i.e. both MAT and SAT with at least 40% in each. However, for reserved category, the minimum NMMS cut off will be 32%
  • The family income of the student should not be more than Rs. 1.50 lakh per annum from all sources
  • Awardees should satisfy the eligibilities and conditions mentioned above
