About INSPIRE Faculty Scheme

INSPIRE Faculty Scheme opens up an 'Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC)' for young researchers in the age group of 27-32 years for independent research to augment high-quality scientific manpower in scientific and educational institutions. It is open to candidates who have completed a PhD in science, mathematics, engineering, pharmacy, medicine, and agriculture-related subjects. This page gives the details regarding the INSPIRE Faculty Scheme 2019.

  • The candidate has to choose the host institution by themselves where they would be conducting their independent research and they would be receiving close to 17 lakh p.a. for conducting their independent research.
  • The Scheme provides a provision of maximum 1000 INSPIRE Faculty. The INSPIRE Faculty Award offers contractual research positions and is for a maximum period of 5 years. There is not a guarantee for tenure positions after 5 years.
  • INSPIRE Faculty Scheme is offered by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
  • It provides attractive opportunities to young researchers for developing independent scientific profiles and intends to help them emerge as S&T leaders in the future.

Inspire Faculty Fellowship Amount

All selected candidates should avail the INSPIRE Faculty Award within 3 months of their final selection.

  • Each selected INSPIRE Faculty will receive a consolidated amount of approximately equal to Rs. 1,25,000 per month equivalent to the scale of the Assistant Professor of an IIT as Fellowship amount.
  • A Research Grant of Rs 7 lakh per year for 5 years is also provided to each successful candidate.

There will be no extension of the awards.

If the candidates get a permanent position within the tenure of the Faculty Scheme

  • When an Awardee finds a permanent position during the Award tenure of 5 years, the Award amount shall be discontinued from the day the Awardee joins the permanent position.
  • The awardee may although continue with the INSPIRE Faculty Scheme availing only the Research Grant for the balance period to carry out research at the new position.

Who can apply for the Inspire Fellowship?

  • Nationality: Indian citizens and people of Indian (PIO) origin including NRI/PIO status.
  • Age Limit: The upper age limit as on 1 July 2019 is 32 years for considering support for a period of 5 years.  (35 years in case of SC and ST candidates)
  • Publications in highly reputed Journals demonstrating the research potential of the candidate.

Academic Qualifications

  • Minimum Marks: Candidates shall possess a minimum 60% (or equivalent CGPA) marks throughout his/her academic profile starting from the Higher Secondary examination (Class 12 onwards)
  • Candidates should have done PhD from any recognized university in the world in science, mathematics, engineering, pharmacy, medicine, and agriculture-related subjects.
  • If in case you have submitted the PhD Thesis and are waiting for the award of the degree then also you are eligible to apply.
  • Toppers are Desirable candidates: Candidates who are within top 1% at the School Leaving Examination, IIT-JEE rank holders, 1st Rank Holders either in graduation or post-graduation level university examination
  • Employed Candidates -  Candidates who are employed in regular/contractual position within India may apply for INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship award towards improvement and enhancement of their career prospects but upon selection the candidate will need to resign (no lien or deputation or any type of leave would be accepted) from the current job and organization for implementation of the INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship award.

The candidates cannot hold any other award with this fellowship.

Steps to fill the INSPIRE Faculty Scheme Application Form

  • STEP 1: Registration: Firstly, the candidates are needed to register themselves on the official website by following the link given above. 
  • STEP 2: Scan and save the documents: After registering themselves, they need to scan the documents and upload the same.
  • STEP 3: Fill in the Online Application: After uploading the documents, the candidates have to fill the online application form.
  • STEP 4: Submission: After filling up the application form, the candidates need to submit the application form. The details regarding the application form are given below.

INSPIRE Faculty Scheme Selection Process

A two-tier selection process will be followed:  

  • Tier 1: Discipline-based Expert Committee in case of candidates under `Direct‟ and `Nomination‟ Mode
  • Tier 2: Institutional level short-listing in `Institutional Mode‟

Discipline-based Expert Committee Strategy for Selection

The team of experts appointed will evaluate and screen the candidates who apply on Direct and Nominated Routes without support from host-institutions.

Institutional level Strategy for Selection

Renowned academic institutions like IITs, IISc, IISERs, TIFR, CSIR Laboratories etc. and Central & State Universities selected under PURSE scheme of DST could adopt their own internal process for shortlisting the candidates and submit the list for final selection by the Apex Committee.

Final selection will be done by the Apex Level Committee.
