About BBC’s 25th International Play Writing Competition

  • British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Radio invites writers from outside the UK to participate in 25th International Play Writing Competition 2016.
  • Eligibility: To participate in the competition, participants should be at least 18 years old and are required to write a play of approximately 53 minutes having six central characters.
  • Prizes: Three winners will be awarded cash prize and their plays will be recorded and aired on BBC Radio.
    • Two winners will get a chance to attend the recording of their plays in BBC London while the third winner will spend 2 weeks in London attending the BBC’s London Radio Drama department and a week with BBC World Service.
  • Submission: The submission for the International Play Writing Competition 2016 can be done with either by post or by email.
  • The last date to complete the submission for BBC’s 25th International Play Writing Competition 2016 is January 31, 2015.

  • Nationality: International Play Writing Competition 2016 is open for participants from outside United Kingdome.
  • Age: The participant needs to be at least 18 years or older.
  • Proficiency: Both professional, as well as amateur writers, can submit their plays for the competition.
  • Participation: Writers can participate individually as well as in groups.

Not Eligible to participate

  • Entrants must not be BBC or British Council or The Open University or Commonwealth Foundation employees.

BBC’s 25th International Play Writing Competition Reward

25th International Play Writing Competition 2016 Rewards

Out of all the entries received only three winners will be selected and the following prizes will be given to them:

  • English as a First Language Winner: Cash Prize of 2200GBP (Approx. INR 2.2 lakh) will be given to the selected winner for the overall winning playwright of the best play written with English as a first language.
    • A trip to London to see the play being recorded for broadcast on the BBC World Service and to attend a prize-giving evening will also be offered to the winner.
  • English as a Second Language Winner: Cash Prize of 2200GBP (Approx. INR 2.2 lakh) will be given to the selected winner for the overall winning playwright of the best play written with English as a second language.
    • A trip to London to see the play being recorded for broadcast on the BBC World Service and to attend a prize-giving evening will also be offered to the winner.
  • The Georgi Markov Prize: The winner of The Georgi Markov Prize will get to spend 2 weeks in London, a week of which will be spent with the BBC’s London Radio Drama department and a week with BBC World Service.
    • The expenses on Flight to London and accommodation will be borne by BBC Radio.

25th International Play Writing Competition 2016 Application Process

The writers willing to send their entries for the 25th International Play Writing Competition need to complete their submission either by post or by e-mail. The details related to the 25th International Play Writing Competition application process are

  • Entry Form: The play needs to be accompanied by the completely filled application form. >> Click here to download the application form.
  • Specifications of the Play: The play needs to be as per the following specifications:
    • Number of Entries: Candidates can submit only one entry and in case multiple entries are submitted only the first entry will be considered.
    • Language: The play needs to be in English only.
    • Duration: The duration of the play needs to be approximately 53 minutes which approximately equals 45 pages of A4 paper.     
    • The plays should not have been earlier published in any medium.
  • Documents required for Submission: The submission of the entries needs to be done along with the following documents:
    • A script for a 53-minute radio play, with up to 6 central characters.
    • A synopsis which outlines your play is no longer than 400 words.
    • A completed form (download here), attached to your play and synopsis.
  • Submission: The submission of the entry needs to be done either by post or by email. Both the addresses are as follow:
