SOL students appeared for the exam without study material. SOL is the first open and distance learning institutions of Delhi University (DU). Around 4.5 lakh students of SOL have completed their whole semester without any study material. Now when the postgraduate exams were scheduled on 1 December 2017, the students were told that some of the books are now available to be distributed. The students of SOL had suffered a lot. It is because the decision to print book was taken in the month of October instead of April. However, it took one more month to readied the study materials. PG students got photocopies of the study material just a week ago, the authority said that It will take another month before all materials get ready for students.

Protest by Students and Teachers for SOL Study Materials

As per the sources of Times of India, the teachers of the institution informed the human resource development ministry, University Grants Commission and the vice-chancellor's office to have a look at the poor condition of the students and highlight their plight and serious administrative and financial irregularities.

J Khuntia, a faculty member who is also president of the teachers' association said: "It's unfair that even after paying the fees, the students are made to wait for six months for the material". He further added that there are many economically weak students who come from not so proficient backgrounds. Such students got very good scores in class 12 but then also they chose School of Open Learning (SOL), just because it's affordable. They cannot come to Delhi to get books and they don’t even have internet facility at home to study online and download e-books.

How the problem arose?

SOL's printing committee usually holds the tendering process in April to make the books available by June during admissions. However, this year in the month of April, a committee was set up under a member of the sports council of DU without consulting the SOL teachers.

The committee was later dismissed and a consultant was engaged in the tendering process, there were many errors that the teachers finally rectified and the date of releasing the materials slipped to October
