IIT Admissions, Not Open for Students Born Abroad
Students having parents of Indian origin, but are born abroad, are not eligible for admission into IITs. It is because only Indian Citizens can appear for JEE Main which is a qualifying test for JEE Advanced and admission into IITs and ISM Dhanbad is only on the basis of JEE Advanced. Foreign, Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) category students are although eligible for admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally-funded institutions (CFTIs) through DASA 2015.
Admission to IITs not for students born abroad
Earlier AIEEE was for admission into NITs and IIITs, CFTIs and there was a separate test for IITs known as IIT-JEE. AIEEE was only for Indian Citizens but IIT JEE was open to PIOs, OCIs & Foreign Nationals. From 2013 AIEEE and IIT JEE were replaced by JEE Main and only students who qualified JEE Main were eligible for JEE Advanced for admission into IITs. As only Indian Citizens are eligible for JEE Main 2015 so the students born abroad were clearly left out for admission into IITs in India.
DASA is a Gateway for admission into NIT, IIITs and CFTIs
Students born abroad are not allowed to sit for JEE Main 2015 which is an eligibility stage for JEE Advanced. Rather, these students get admission in NITs, IIITs and CFTIs through Direct Admission to Students Abroad (DASA). At the same time we see that DASA is not for admission into Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). Such a move affects the children who are born abroad to parents of Indian origin who had moved overseas for higher education and employment but have now returned to India.
Some students are at the disadvantage position
Students who have been born abroad but have been studying in India for the past few years also find themselves ineligible for admissions into IITs. They have been paying about nine times the amount of fees paid by their peers in order to study in India. On top of it, they do not have the eligibility to study in IITs after the JEE split.
Students belonging to the Person of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) category are not eligible to appear for entrance exams into NITs and IIITs they can take admission through DASA 2015 by using their SAT 2 scores.
