IIITs are now Institutions of National Importance - IIIT PPP Bill

IIITs are now Institutions of National Importance - IIIT PPP Bill is passed by the Union Cabinet commanded by Shri Narendra Modi which has approved all 15 IIITs as an Institutions of National Importance. Through this approval, the 15 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are now able to grant degrees to the students studying there under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

The IIITs has demanded a bill called The Indian Institute of Information Technology Public Private Partnership (IIIT-PPP) Bill, which is now passed by the cabinet today to "grant statutory status to 15 IIITs set up under the PPP mode and declared them as Institutions of National Importance, to enable them to grant degrees to the students in the academic courses conducted by them".

IIIT Public Private Partnership Bill Details 


Earlier, the Ministry had announced to establish 20 new IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. 15 out of 20 are already established in functioning in Dharwad (Karnataka), Ranchi, Kottayam, Vadodara, Guwahati, Una (Himachal Pradesh), Kota, Sonepat (Haryana), Kalyani (WB), Srirangam (Tamil Nadu), Lucknow, Nagpur, Chittoor (AP), Kurnool (AP) and Pune. The total cost of each IIIT is approximately Rs 128 Crore which is funded by the government of India, state government and the industry in the ratio of 50:35:15.

A government official said in a statement that IIIT- Public Private Partnership bill will provide an authority to the 15 IIITs to use the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech), Master of Technology (M. Tech) and also PhD degree as issued by a University.  It also added, "The grant of a formal degree in Information Technology, Engineering or PhD will enhance the prospects of the graduating students in the job market and will also enable the Institutes to attract enough students required to develop a strong research base in the country in the field of information technology."
