About UN Habitat Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award

  • UN-Habitat Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award invites application from outstanding inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs primarily from the developing countries who are working in improving the livelihood for the youth. Youth from other countries will also qualify to get recognition by way of citations.
  • Institutions and individuals that promote and catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship will also be recognized and cited.
  • Both institutions and individuals can apply for the award and have a separate application procedure which has been discussed in detail in the Application Process Section.
  • The total amount of the prize pool is USD 200,000 distributed among five categories, namely:
    • Youth Leadership,
    • Green inventions and Innovations,
    • Urban Ecological Safety,
    • Youth Entrepreneurship
    • Social and cultural innovations.
  • Duration of Award: UN-Habitat Youth Innovation and entrepreneurship Award is Biennial.

About the Scholarship

  • Biennial Youth Innovation Awards Programme has been jointly launched by UN-Habitat and the International Ecological Safety Collaboration Organization in association with China Development Orient Urban Development and Investment Company Limited.
  • Main aim of the award is to acknowledge and recognize initiatives which will create positive impact socially, economically and environmentally.

  • All young men and women whose age is between 15 and 32 years and reside in the developing countries.
  • Candidate should be running youth led for-profit and or nonprofit organization, or a business or entity that aims to improve youth livelihoods and better serve their communities with accomplishment in any of the above Award Categories

UN Habitat Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Reward

  • The winners will be awarded a monetary prize.
  • The total amount of the prize pool is USD 200,000 distributed among five categories.
  • The Award will consist of
    • A cash grant of $20,000 for the winner (Up to 2 winners for each category)
    • A trophy
    • An honorary certificate

The Award winners will also be invited:

  • to share their innovations and initiatives at the relevant UN-Habitat/IESCO/CDB Orient meetings and conference.
  • to provide information about award winning innovations on the UN-Habitat and IESCO websites.

DETAILED BACKGROUND DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGAINSATION

  • Substantive information about the organization being nominated including their mission, goals, history, size, and previous experience.  (Word Limit: 500 Words)
  • Age profile of your entity’s management/office bearers/governing body.  (Word Limit: 200 Words)
  • Describe the main innovative aspects of the initiative for example, in the use of new technology, new working methods, or lessons learned from other initiatives/practices.  (Word Limit: 800 Words)
  • Contact Information: Address, e-mail, phone, fax, contact person/s
  • Description of the invention or innovation or project. Word Limit: 800 words
  • Details about partners.  (Word Limit: 500 Words)
  • Impact of the organization  (Word Limit: 500 Words)
  • Sustainability(Word Limit: 500 Words)

DESCRIPTION OF THE INDIVIDUAL INNOVATION AND INITIATIVE

  • One page summary of the invention/innovation. (Word Limit: 500 Words)
  • A complete description of your project or initiative / innovation/invention to include technical information that will be reviewed.  (Word Limit: 500 Words)
  • Involvement of Others in the process.  (Word Limit: 500 Words)
  • Endorsements.  (Word Limit: 500 Words)
  • Copy of the patent, if patented
  • Statement addressing economic, social, and environmental impact.  (Word Limit: 500 Words)
  • why you should be considered for the UN-Habitat Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award 2 to 3 Pages

The same should be accompanied by the following two more items

  • A summary of how the cash prize will be used and how it will promote the work of the applicant in furthering the mission.  (Word Limit: 500 Words)
  • Independent references including Video footage either describing or advertising the inventor or invention.
    • Specifications of video/Image
      • Digital photographs should be in 300 DPI or higher resolution.

Important Points

  • In case the candidate has to send some additional information they have to CLEARLY indicate the number of corresponding attachments as well as their personal details for ease of reference.
  • Format: All the attachments should be in PDF Format
  • A video clip of the initiative is also required
  • The full submission including references should not exceed 10 typed pages of Times New Roman, 12 points. 
  • Kindly Note: Copies of articles etc. are extra to the 10 pages

Points to Remember

  • Comprehensive and Verifiable Information: Make sure to submit comprehensive and verifiable information as far as possible, preferably in electronic form
  • English Only: Submissions shall be made in English.
  • Say NO to Automatic Translation: Automatic Translation is strictly prohibited
  • Enhance Verifiability: Candidates can include the following optional supporting materials that can enhance verifiability:
    • Articles appearing in newspapers, professional journals, newsletters or other publications
    • Digital standard format videos less than 10 minutes in length;
    • Photographs and/or other graphic material
    • Brochures or other promotional material.

UN Habitat Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Selection Process

All the applications received will be acknowledged. Winners will be announced in September 2015. Step by Step process of selection process

  • Entries will be prescreened to make sure that they meet the eligibility requirements and that there are no technical problems.
  • All entries that meet the reporting format and the basic criteria will be forwarded to the Technical Expert Review group/Committee (RG/C) for review.
  • RG/C  will short list a maximum of 10 candidates for each award category and submit the list to the International Jury
  • The International Jury shall review and assess the respective portfolios of the shortlisted candidates and propose to the Steering Committee the winners.
  • All the winning candidates will be informed via email when their submission has been officially accepted into the competition.
