About Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership Scholarship

The Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation application process have started. The candidates can apply for this scholarship before 9 January 2019. Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership Scholarship invites applications from US and Non-US Citizens for the summer program at the University of San Diego.

This scholarship is fully funded by a generous grant from the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. Fellows receive hands-on training in team-building, public speaking, negotiation, mediation and working together to solve international problems. 

Candidate can be a graduate student with a professional interest in international relations, diplomacy, international economic development or related fields.

Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation is an exciting international program that provides unique University-based leadership experience and programs in international cooperation.

The Hansen Summer Institute will host its next group of young leaders in July at the University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES).

Summer Program Duration: It will be an approximately 3-week program. It will start from June 30 and end on 21 July.

What are the features of the Summer Program

  • A primary goal of the program focuses on creating an international community of young scholars who will use their summer experience as a foundation for building lasting friendships and acquiring a common practical understanding of a more peaceful future.
  • Program elements will involve classroom instruction and hands-on training in the latest techniques of conflict resolution, mediation, and intercultural management.
  • Classroom training will complement local excursions to San Diego historical attractions and cultural events including a fourth of July parade, a Padres baseball game, and a harbour cruise.
  • Hansen Summer Institute training aims to provide a "leadership toolbox" to participants for resolving conflict and building a better future for their respective countries.

  • Candidates who have demonstrated leadership potential by working for community service, another public service or in a non-governmental organization
  • Nationality: People of all Nationalities are eligible to participate
  • Age: Aged between 20-25 years as on 1 July 
  • Academic Qualification: The candidate should have been Upper-division undergraduate with 2 years of college/university
    • Candidate can be a graduate student with a professional interest in international relations, diplomacy, international economic development or related fields.
  • Skills: Candidate must have demonstrated leadership potential outside of the classroom in the community, nation or region.
  • English Requirement: Have an academic adviser verify in writing the candidates English proficiency.
  • Passport: Candidates must have a valid international passport with US visa if necessary by the time the program begins.

Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership Scholarship Reward

Accommodation and meals for the duration of the program, with shared rooms with participants of the same gender. Transportation to/from the campus to all meetings and activities.

NON-US Students also receive

  • Round trip international air travel from the participant’s hometown to San Diego, California.
  • DS-2019 - Student and Exchange Visitor (SEVIS) fee
  • Health insurance for the duration of the program.

The Hansen Summer Institute is fully funded by the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. This includes international airfare, room and board and all programmatic costs. Selected candidates only have to pay the fees for obtaining a passport, a U.S. visa and spending money.

Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership Scholarship Application form and Process

The candidates can apply for this scholarship through online mode. Candidates have to fill the online application form for participating in this scholarship. The selection committee will not review the application form of the student until the institute has received the entire, completed application (100% in all sections, including transcripts and letters of reference). Submission of Application Form

The application form of Hansen Summer Institute has to be submitted through online mode. There is no offline process to submit the application form.

Submission of Reference Letters

Candidates have required two reference letters from persons who know them well and can explain why they are a qualified applicant for the program. Candidates should click on the "Request Sections" button on their application dashboard to submit the names and email addresses of their referees. An email will be sent to referees with a link to candidate's application through the system. They will be asked to complete a short questionnaire and be given directions on how to upload their letters of recommendation. If the letters are not in English, they should have them translated and can submit both the original and the translated versions.

Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership Scholarship Selection Process

Preference may be given to students who have never been to the United States before, but all qualified students are encouraged to apply.

Qualified students for this scholarship are required two reference letters from persons who know them well and can explain why they are a qualified applicant for the program. The reference letters should be written on the organisation's letterhead. The criteria of reference persons are mentioned below:

  • The person should be an academic advisor or professor. This person should be able to evaluate your English proficiency.
  • A Person from an NGO or community organisation with whom you have worked.

Review and Result: Candidates will be selected by the team of experts duly appointed on the basis of the application received, fulfilling of the eligibility criteria.

The Review of the applications will begin in February, and the result will be announced in Mid March.
