About GSC Transfer Program

GSC (Global Science course) Transfer program is a first of its kind launched by University of Tokyo that accepts selected students from other countries in the third year of undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Science. 

GSC Transfer Program is accepting applications only for the department of Chemistry. The students who have completed 2 years of study in basic Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics related subjects will migrate to University of Tokyo and will complete 2 years of study in Tokyo from Fall 2016 to October 2018. GSC Transfer Program offers two admissions in a year, Fall (October) and Spring (April).

GSC Transfer Program Application for the Fall has started from January 12, 2016, and the last date to apply is April 8, 2016, 5 PM (JST).

Details
  • Education Abroad: Prospective students must have successfully completed or will be completing their first two years of studies in a comparable undergraduate program at an accredited higher educational institution before enrolling into GSC. It is also necessary for prospective students to have received secondary and tertiary education outside of Japan.
  • Science background: Prospective students are expected to have completed basic Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics related subjects in their first and second year of undergraduate studies at their university before applying to the School of Science of the University of Tokyo as a third year transfer student.
  • English Language: Prospective students must have a good command inEnglish language as all lectures are delivered in English. Applicants who meet either of the following criteria are not required to submit any English language proficiency test scores:
    • Native speakers of the English language
    • Received formal education in English continuously for the approximate past 8 years
    • Applicants that do not meet either criteria are required to submit one of the following test scores:

  • Credit Eligibility: Prospective students have gained a minimum of 62 credits from their first two years of undergraduate studies. The GSC Faculty Committee will evaluate each applicant individually to decide on credit eligibility.

GSC Transfer Program Reward

  • The successful students will be offered full "School of Science Scholarship for Transfer Students" amount to pay for their annual tuition fees and support their living expenses.
  • The school of science will provide 150,000 Japanese Yen every month for up to two consecutive years.

  • Personal information: Candidates must fill their personal information like email, phone number, mailing address etc exactly mentioned in their passport, birth certificate or other official documents.
  • Educational background: Candidates are required to fulfill all Post-Secondary and Secondary Institutions they have attended form the recent (from present to 7th grade).
  • English language Qualifications: Candidates must fill their English language qualification as mentioned in the eligibility criteria such as TOEFL, ILETS scores etc.
  • Personal Statement: Personal statement is the additional information provided by the candidates to enrich the application form. Candidates must provide a personal statement not exceeding 1000 word-limit must be provided in English that addresses the following questions:
    • The reason you wish to apply to the Global Science Course at the University of Tokyo.
    • Describe and discuss any academic experiences or challenges faced during your undergraduate study that influenced your intellectual growth, how you overcame it and/or lessons you learned.
    • Your interest in pursuing Chemistry as a major and what academic as well as future goals you have set for yourself.
  • Additional Information: Candidates can also list any kind of their significant academic achievements or awards/honor they have received and in any of the extracurricular activities they have participated.
  • Evaluation: Candidates are required to provide the contact information of two of their academic evaluators from their current University.
  • Application Fee: After filling the application form, the candidates must click to “Pay Application fee” to pay the non-refundable fee of 10,000 Japanese Yen (+432 Japanese Yen processing fee).’
  • Uploading Documents: Candidates must upload the following documents in English that should not exceed 3 MB:
    • Official Middle School/Junior High School Transcript(s)
    • Official High School/Senior High School Transcript(s)
    • Official University/College Transcript(s)
    • Enrollment Verification Certificate (Certificate of Enrollment)
    • Course Syllabus
    • Copy(ies) of Passport(s)
    • Application Fee Payment Receipt
  • Declaration: Candidates are required to sign the declaration electronically at the end of the Online Application Form.
