About Central Sector Scholarship

Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for college & university is given by MHRD, Govt. of India to meritorious students who have passed Class 12. This scholarship scheme namely “Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for college & university students” was introduced in the 11th five-year plan while discontinuing all the earlier scholarship schemes.

  • The Scholarship is given on the basis of marks scored by students in Class 12 and no separate scholarship exam is conducted by the government for giving the scholarship.

  • Latest Update: Aadhar Card Compulsory for CSS Registration and Renewal - Read News (18 Feb 2017)
  • The Registration for Central Sector Scholarship has started and the last date to apply is extended to October 31, 2016. It is compulsory for the candidates to have Aadhar number for receiving the scholarship. The application has to be filled online.
  • Scholarship Renewal: CBSE invites candidates for the renewal of Central Sector Scholarship scheme. The last date to apply for renewal is December 2016. 

Under the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for college & university students 2016, the scholarship is granted to class 12 meritorious students who are from lower income group families so that they can pursue higher education.

  • Number of Scholarships: A total of 82000 fresh scholarships will be granted out of which 41000 is for girls and 41000 for boys.

Central Sector Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Details
  • Nationality: Candidate must be an Indian citizen belonging to non-creamy layer.
  • Academic Qualification: Candidate must have passed the class 12 examination (Senior Secondary Certificate Examination 2016) conducted by CBSE, ISC or any of the state boards of India.
  • Minimum Marks: Candidate must secure the following minimum total aggregate marks in the stream opted by them.
    • Select Your Board and Type your roll number to check whether you are eligible for the Central Sector Scholarship.
  • Candidate must have taken admission in an undergraduate regular course in any recognised Indian university/institution.
  • Family Annual Income: Through all sources, the total annual income of candidate’s parents must not exceed Rs. 6 lakhs per annum. (Earlier the ceiling was Rs. 4.5 lakhs)
  • Candidate should not belong to creamy layer and must not be availing any other scholarship.
  • Candidate should be pursuing a regular course and not through correspondence or distance learning.

Central Sector Scholarship Reward

Scholarship will be distributed in the ratio of 3:2:1 among the pass outs of science, commerce, and humanities in the following manner:

  • In the case of professional courses, the candidate will get Rs.1000 per month for first 3 years and Rs.2000 per month in 4th and 5th year.
  • In an academic year scholarship would be paid for 10 months.

Mode of disbursal of Central Sector Scholarship

  • Candidates will get the scholarship amount in their bank account through ECS (Electronic Clearing System) mode.  
  • For receiving the scholarship amount, the candidates have to open their bank account in any nationalised bank/commercial bank having ECS facility.
  • Candidates have to provide their correct bank account no., bank name, bank detailed address and the correct RTGS/NEFT branch code (11 digits alphanumeric code) of the bank. 

Renewal of Central Sector Scholarship


Marks: The candidates have to fill an online renewal form to renew their scholarship. The scholarship will be renewed only when the candidate have passed with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks in all the subjects in 2-semester examination or annual examinations.

  • Attendance: The candidates also have to achieve the target of 75% attendance while avoiding punishable activities because if in any case scholarship is cancelled, it will not be renewed.

Online registration: In order to make fresh applications for the scholarship, candidates are required to visit the National e-Scholarship portal to complete their applications.The registration process for the Central Sector Scholarship scheme has started and the students have to visit scholarships.gov.in to apply for the scholarship.

There is no offline application for the scholarship program.

The envelope containing a printout of online application form and other documents must bear the CSSS-2016 online registration number on the top so as to reach the board on or before October 31, 2016.

Documents to be enclosed with the application form

  • Under Graduate Course joining report duly signed and stamped by the head of the institution from where the course is being pursued.
  • Original copy of parents income affidavit which should be either in Hindi or English in the prescribed format on a non-judicial stamp paper of Rs.10/- duly sworn in before Notary Public/First class Executive Magistrate/Revenue Officer (write online registration no. on its top).
  • Duly signed online generated Application form (write online registration no. on its top).
  • A copy of Mark sheet of Sr. School Certificate Exam – 2016 (write online registration no. on the top of mark sheet).
  • A copy of Caste Certificate, if applicable (write online registration no. on its top).
  • Income Tax Returns/Form-16 of both the Parents (of the year ending March 2016) issued by the employer should be attached along with the affidavit wherever applicable).
  • One cancelled cheque of personal/saving account or photocopy of the front page of bank passbook (which is used for scholarship) bearing account number and NEFT/RTGS code.
  • A hard copy of online application signed by the applicant.

Central Sector Scholarship Selection Process

Within 5 weeks of class 12th result declaration all the state boards, CBSE & ICSE draw up a merit list of potential candidates for the scholarship on the basis of the marks obtained by candidates in their respective board examinations.

  • The concerned authorities will write to the eligible students to confirm within 15 days whether they are willing to accept the scholarship.
  • Only those candidates who show willingness within 30 days for the scholarship will be considered for the scholarship.The shortlisted candidates will get the following documents:
    • Entitlement Card
    • Income Affidavit Form
    • A form for ‘Statement of Particulars’
  • All these documents are to be completely filled by the candidate and deposited to the Head of the Institution where he/she has taken admission. From where these documents will be forwarded to respective boards.
  • On receiving the documents, the respective board will compile the list of scholarship awardees on the basis of merit, eligibility criteria & reservation guidelines applicable. The prepared list will be forwarded to National Scholarship Division of MHRD.
  • On receipt of the list, Ministry of Human Resource Development will make arrangement for the disbursement of the Scholarship amount directly to the bank account of the selected candidates.

CSS Scholarship Disbursements & Beneficiary Year Wise

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of the results of Senior Secondary Examination. Total number of scholarships has been divided amongst the State Education Boards based on the State’s population in the age group of 18-25 years.
