About Central Sector Scholarship

Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for college & university is given by MHRD, Govt. of India to meritorious students who have passed Class 12. This scholarship scheme namely “Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for college & university students” was introduced in the 11th five-year plan while discontinuing all the earlier scholarship schemes. Under the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for college & university students, the scholarship is granted to class 12 meritorious students who are from lower-income group families so that they can pursue higher education. Candidates can apply online for Central Sector Scholarship 2020 through National Scholarship Portal. Scroll down to read more about the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for college & university.

  • The Scholarship is given on the basis of marks scored by students in Class 12 and no separate scholarship exam is conducted by the government for giving the scholarship
  • Number of Scholarships: A total of 82000 fresh scholarships will be granted out of which 41000 is for girls and 41000 for boys.

  • The scholarship will be distributed in the ratio of 3:2:1 among the pass outs of science, commerce, and humanities.

  • In the case of professional courses, the candidate will get Rs.1000 per month for the first 3 years and Rs.2000 per month in 4th and 5th year.
  • From the past year, the scholarship would be paid for 10 months.

Central Sector Scholarship Disbursement Modes

  • Candidates will get the scholarship amount in their bank account through DBT Mode i.e. Direct Beneficiary Transfer Mode
  • For receiving the scholarship amount, the candidates have to open their bank account in any nationalized bank/commercial bank having ECS facility.
  • Candidates have to provide their correct bank account no., bank name, bank detailed address and the correct RTGS/NEFT branch code (11 digits alphanumeric code) of the bank.

Central Sector Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Candidate must be an Indian citizen belonging to non-creamy layer.
  • Academic Qualification: Candidate must have passed the class 12 examination (Senior Secondary Certificate Examination 2019) conducted by CBSE, ISC or any of the state boards of India.
  • Minimum Marks: Candidate must secure the following minimum total aggregate marks in the stream opted by them.
    • Select Your Board and Type your roll number to check whether you are eligible for the Central Sector Scholarship.
  • Students who are above the 80th percentile of successful candidates in the relevant stream from the respective Board of Examination in Class 12 of 10+2 pattern or equivalent.
  • Candidate must have taken admission in an undergraduate regular course (not correspondence or distance mode) in any recognised Indian university/institution.

Family Annual Income Limit for Central Sector Scholarship

  • Through all sources, the total annual income of candidate’s parents must not exceed Rs. 8 lakhs per annum. (Earlier the ceiling was Rs. 4.5 lakhs and later increased to Rs. 6 Lakhs)
  • Candidate should not belong to the creamy layer and must not be availing any other scholarship.
  • Candidate should be pursuing a regular course and not through correspondence or distance learning.

Central Sector Scholarship Application form and Process

In order to make fresh applications for the scholarship, candidates are required to visit the National Scholarship Portal to complete their applications. The registration process for the Central Sector Scholarship scheme has started. The candidates can fill Central Sector Scholarship Application Form 2020 through the link available on this page.

Submission of Central Sector Scholarship Application Form

Candidates need to apply and submit Central Sector Scholarship 2020 online on or before the last date. The candidates need to upload the required documents as well while applying online for Central Sector Scholarship through National Online Portal.

Verification of the Scholarship Application

The online applications would be verified at two levels

  • By the Institute where the student is studying. 
  • By the respective State Education Board.

The CSS application which is not verified by either 1 or both will be considered Invalid.

Documents to be submitted to the Institute

  • 12th Marksheet
  • Income certificate
  • Under Graduate Course joining report duly signed and stamped by the head of the institution from where the course is being pursued

Aadhaar Card of the candidate (Mandatory) for Central Sector Scholarship

Aadhaar Card is compulsory for the scholarship and in case the student does not have aadhaar card then they can use the following until Aadhaar Number is issued

(i) Aadhaar Enrolment ID slip (ii) Application made for Aadhaar enrolment (iii) Voter identity card (iv) Permanent Account Number (v) Passport (vi) Driving License (vii) Certificate of identity having a photo of such member issued by a Gazetted Officer or a Tehsildar on official letterhead; (viii) Identity Card issued by the college or institute or university. (viii) Any other document with photo specified by the State Government.

Central Sector Scholarship Renewal

Candidates can apply for Central Sector Scholarship Renewal from July 2020. The candidates have to fill an online renewal form to renew their scholarship. The scholarship will be renewed only when the candidate has passed with a minimum aggregate of 50% or more marks in the preceding examination.

  • Attendance: The candidates also have to achieve the target of 75% attendance while avoiding punishable activities because if in any case scholarship is cancelled, it will not be renewed.
  • a scholar would be allowed to continue/renew his/her scholarship if, he/she changes the course of study to a stream not offered by his school Board in Class 12 (e.g. Law, Fashion Technology, etc.). Students changing their college/institute of study would be allowed to continue/renew the scholarship provided the course of study and the institution is recognized.

Central Sector Scholarship Selection Process

Within 5 weeks of class 12th result declaration all the state boards, CBSE & ICSE draw up a merit list of potential candidates for the scholarship on the basis of the marks obtained by candidates in their respective board examinations.

Central Sector Scholarship Merit list as per the State allocated quota would be generated from the verified applications. The state-wise quota for the CSS Scholarship is given below in the table format.

CSS Scholarship Disbursements & Beneficiary Year Wise

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of the results of Senior Secondary Examination. The total number of scholarships has been divided amongst the State Education Boards based on the State’s population in the age group of 18-25 years.
