The Union Cabinet chaired by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved upgradation of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) campuses for implementation of reservation for students belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC).
The government has also extended the time span for utilization of balance available fund of Rs. 90.13 crore, by two years. Earlier it was supposed to be March 31, 2015 which has now been extended upto March 2017. As per the official statement, “This will enable upgradation of facilities for implementation of OBC reservation in NIFT and operating the campuses more effectively and efficiently.”
Due to the upgradation, additional infrastructure facilities at existing campuses will be created, more class rooms will be created along with laboratories, hostel accommodation for students, purchase of machinery and equipments, among others
Background of NIFT
In the year 1986 NIFT was established by ministry of textiles as an autonomous society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 to provide quality education in the field of fashion technology. Moreover in the year 2006 NIFT was approved statutory status empowering it to award degrees and other academic distinctions.
The head office of NIFT is located in New Delhi while NIFT has its centers at Mumbai, Kolkata, Kangra, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Raebareli, Patna, Shillong, Bhopal, Kannur, Bhubaneswar and Jodhpur.
NIFT offers full time degree programmes ranging four-year bachelor and two-year master programmes in the areas of Design, Management and Technology through its 15 campuses located across the country.
