From this year, AIPMT is likely to transform into NEET UG. There will be only one medical entrance exam for  admission to various Medical and Dental colleges across India.

The Health Ministry, the CBSE and the Medical Council of India (MCI) counsels on April 27, 2016, had told Honorable Supreme Court of India that govt. is ready to hold National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET 2016).  The Government has further proposed that NEET can be conducted in two phases. The tentative schedule of NEET UG will be submitted to the Court on April 28, 2016.

An Official stated that "We have worked out a tentative schedule which will be submitted to the SC. Since it is too late to conduct a fresh test, we will suggest that AIPMT be treated as Phase 1 of NEET and a second phase can be conducted separately for those who have not applied for AIPMT".

As per the reports, it is likely that CBSE will suggest  that AIPMT scheduled to be conducted on May 1, 2016, must be treated as Phase 1 of NEET.  NEET Phase 2 will be conducted for the candidates who have not applied for AIPMT 2016, will be tentatively conducted on July 24, 2016.

NEET UG Exam Schedule (Proposed)

Event Date
NEET UG Phase 1 May 1, 2016
NEET UG Phase 2 July 24, 2016
Joint Result of Phase 1 & 2 August 17, 2016
Last date for Admission September 30, 2016

The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) was proposed earlier in the year 2013; however, the Honorable Supreme Court of India struck down the idea and questioned the Medical Council of India regarding the conduct of the exam.
The NEET exam would be “Old Wine in A New Bottle” but with a better taste and impact. As proposed, the NEET will have just one single paper similar to that of AIPMT.  At the same time, the NEET will be a common entrance test across all the seats present in various medical and dental college in different state and union territories in India.
