After UGC Directive, 29 Varsities to remove 'University' from their name. Earlier this week, UGC had issued deadline letter to 29 Institutes to remove 'University' Tag from their name. The move is in accordance with the recent order by Honorable Supreme Court. HRD ministry will also notify new names of 14 deemed-to-be institutes, which earlier carried 'University' in their names.
7 of these 29 deemed to be institutions have been directed to apply for alternative names within the deadline and the rest have been asked to revert to their original names. List of all the institutes is given on this page.
29 Varsities to remove 'University' from their name - Highlights of the News
On Wednesday 29 November 2017, University Grants Commission letters to the 29 deemed institute to remove the word “university” from their name before 30 November 2017 till 4 pm.
- By 1st December most of the Universities have informed UGC that they will do so.
- Revised names of three deemed-to-be- universities will be notified by next week. HRD Ministry will notify new names for 11 other institutes in few weeks.
- UGC has also listed the name of the 29 institutes in the letter released on its official website, thousands of students are currently enrolled in these institutions. If any of the listed institutes fail to respond by 4 pm, will be facing the loss of the deemed tag.
- The University Grants Commission (UGC) released the notification as a direction issued by the Supreme Court on 3 November this year wherein the court has directed the University Grants Commission to take appropriate steps and restrain Deemed to be Institutions like Symbiosis, Manipal and TERI from using the word 'University. Earlier, the UGS has issued the necessary instruction for the selected institutions to submit compliance of not using the word 'University' within 15 days. The Human Resource Ministry (HRD) grants deemed to be the status of the institutes based on recommendations from the University Grants Commission.

The UGC has decided to give the last chance to the listed institutions to remove the tag University from their name and wrote 2 separate letters for the VCs of these institutions. 7 of these 29 deemed to be institutions have been told in the letter to apply for alternative names within the deadline and the rest have been asked to revert to their original names and drop the word 'university' from their name.
Both the letter from the UGC secretary P.K. Thakur carried a common warning saying “Failure to comply with these directions would amount to violation of the UGC Regulations, 2016 and necessary action would be initiated against the Institution Deemed to be University in accordance with Clause 22.0 of these Regulations which may include recommending withdrawal of the declaration notifying the institution as an Institution Deemed to be University to the Central Government”.
