About CAT

CAT 2017 will be conducted for admission to various Post Graduation Management programs in IIMs and various other Indian universities and colleges. Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow will conduct Common Admission Test on 26 November 2017 in two sessions. CAT is a Post Graduate Admission test and the CAT application will begin from 9 August 2017. IIMs offer various Post Graduate Management Program namely, PGDM, PGP, PGP-FABM, PGPEM, PGPPM, EPGPM, PGPSM and PGP-ABM which are Equivalent to MBA.

CAT 2017 will be a Computer Based Test. The scores obtained by the students in CAT will be calculated and accepted by the top-ranking management institutes including the IIMs.

CAT Updates

  • Last year a total of 2,32,434 candidates registered for the Common Admission Test (CAT) which is a huge rise in comparison to 2,18,664 application in 2015.
  • While filling the application form the candidates now only have to fill the details of commencement and completion of Bachelor's degree. Previously, CAT registration form used to only accept marks for the graduate degree in the standard three-year format. This change is done for the candidates who have done their graduation in 1980's (when Bachelor's degree was a two-year course).
  • Last year 2,18,664 applicants registered for CAT Exam and of them 1,79,602 candidates appeared in the exam. CAT 2017 Exam Pattern remains same as of last year. There will be non-MCQ Questions this year as well.

Latest Update: The last date to apply for the CAT has been extended. Earlier, the application submission deadline was 20 September 2017 which has now been extended up to 25 September 2017. Hence, the candidates who have not register for CAT yet can do the same until the application deadline.

CAT Eligibility criteria

Academic Qualification

  • The candidate must have secured a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA. The candidates belonging to Scheduled caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Person with Disability (PwD)/ Differently Abled (DA) category must have secured at least 45% marks.
  • The candidates must have passed from any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational which is recognised as Deemed University, or possess an equivalent qualification recognised by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
  • The candidates who have appeared for the final year of Bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification and those who have completed degree requirements are eligible to apply.
  • Those candidates whose results are awaited can also apply for the CAT 2017.

Other Equivalent Qualification

  • The candidates should have done Bachelors in Engineering/Technology such as 4 years after 10+2/Post B.Sc /Post Diploma or B.E/B.Tech equivalent examinations, of Professional Societies, recognised by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE (e.g AMIE by Institution of Engineers-India, AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers India)
  • Any qualification recognised by Association of Indian Universities New Delhi, which is equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree awarded by UGC recognised University/Institutions.

CAT 2017 Registration Process can only be made Online by the candidates who fulfil the above-given eligibility criteria. CAT Registration Process has begun from 9 August 2017. The candidates must read the CAT Information Brochure carefully before filling up the Online Registration Form.

  • Registration: The candidates must visit the official website of CAT that is iimcat.ac.in, or follow the given link to apply for CAT 2017. The candidates need to Register themselves by providing their Username and Password.

  • Basic Details: The candidates must provide their basic qualification and academic qualification in the Online Registration Form.
  • Payment of Registration Fees: The candidates must make the payment of Registration Fee through Credit Card/Debit Card/Net Banking.
  • Exam Centre: The candidates must select the exam centre of their choice in the Registration which is given at this page. The candidates can select any four Exam centre and request for change for exam centre will not be entertained.
  • Preview: The candidates must carefully enter all the important details in the Registration form and check it before the final submission.

It is to be noted that no further changes can be made in the CAT Registration Form after the last date.

CAT Admit Card 2017

CAT 2017 Admit Card will be available to download in the official website of CAT. The candidates can download their CAT Admit Card from 18 October to 26 November 2017. CAT Admit card is an important document and should be brought to the exam centre on the day of the exam.

The candidates should know that the admit card will not be dispatched through the post to the candidates, so no correspondence in this regard will be entertained. The candidates should know that an admit card is an important document to be carried at the exam centre otherwise the entry of the candidates may get restricted.

CAT 2017 Results


CAT Result will be declared tentatively in the second week of January 2018. The shortlisted candidates will be selected for the second round of selection. The list of the shortlisted candidates will be available on the individual IIM websites. Each IIM will send individual Interview letters to the shortlisted candidates directly. The shortlisting criteria for candidates vary in all the IIMs.

IIM Admission Process 


The performance of the candidates in CAT 2017 examination is an important component in the admission Process. Each IIM will have a different and individual selection process of Admission. The process may include the following:

  • Written Ability Test (WAT)
  • Group Discussion (GD)
  • Personal Interview (PI)

IIMs may use the candidate’s past educational presentation, similar work experience and other relevant efforts in selecting and grading of candidates at several stages of the admission process. The admission processes, educational cut-offs, and the weights distributed to the assessment factors may differ across IIMs.

Verification of the Eligibility at IIMs

The candidates need to fulfil the following verification of their eligibility if they have been shortlisted by any IIMs:

Degree Certificate and Mark Sheets

  • The candidate who has been selected by any IIM and is called for an interview at their respective IIMs must bring all the original mark sheets along with their attested copies and submit them at the time of the interview.
  • However, if a candidate gets selected for any of the programme or courses, they must submit their degree certificate and mark sheets of all semesters or years in original and attested form. These documents are submitted for the proof of verification at the time of joining the programme. 

Requirements for Reservation Category

  • The candidates belonging to SC, ST, NC-OBC and DA who are shortlisted for interview must show their original caste/class/disability certificate and also submit their photocopy at the time of interview.
  • Moreover, if the candidates get selected for any course or programme must bring the original and photocopy of the qualifying examination at the time of joining the programme for verification.
  • Further, if a candidate is selected for a programme, the original certificate of qualifying degree and attested copy of the same must be submitted for verification at the time of joining a programme. 

Normalisation of CAT Scores 2017

  • CAT 2017 will be conducted in two sessions as discussed above that is the entrance test and the Interview. Therefore, the Normalisation of Scores is very important to provide fair and equal justice to each the candidates.
  • The scores of the students will be normalised in both the sessions and it will be further normalised into different sections and the scaled scores that are obtained by the normalisation process will be converted into percentages for the shortlisting purposes.
  • The scaled scores for all the three sections, that is, QA, DI & LR and VRC and the total along with the percentage will be published for the purpose of reporting.

CAT Exam pattern

CAT 2017 will be an online or Computer based test

Duration of CAT Exam: 3 hours (180 minutes)

Type of Questions: There will be 100 Objective type or MCQs as well as descriptive types. There will also be non-MCQ questions with no negative marking as was introduced last year. The candidates will have to type in the answer for the questions and no options would be there

  • Negative Marking: 1 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
