About BMM and BMS Entrance Exam: St. Xavier's College, Mumbai offers admission in BMM & BMS Course based on an Entrance Test 2018. Both the courses are of 3 years duration, and the college receives a huge number of applications every year for the limited number of seats. The University of Mumbai introduced the Bachelor of Mass Media (B.M.M.) course in the year 2000-01. It is a three-year degree course with six semesters. The areas of specialisations in the third year are Advertising and Journalism.

St. Xavier's BMM and BMS Entrance Exam Preparation Tips - Topics Decoded

In both BMM and BMS course, the entire question paper will comprise the following subjects and topics. The questions will be random and mostly there will be MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions). The exam is not going to be that much simple and need a faster processing of the questions as the time limit is short i.e. 1 Hour 45 Minutes and the Number of Questions is 100 that includes MCQ and 30 marks will be given to subjective writing skills. The candidates have to stay updated with the listed below topics to secure a seat in St Xaviers. The paper is extremely comprehensive and ensures that each of these aspects is covered while GK, Current Affairs, Basic Mathematics, Data Interpretation questions are generally objective, Language Skills, CR and Creative Thinking questions are subjective. There is No Negative marking so you can use guesses freely.

General Knowledge
GK will include all the fragments of knowledge that you have absorbed since childhood till date. The question can be, 'Who's the Vice President of India?' to 'Which is the largest ad agency in India?' 'In which city the newspaper 'The Hindu' is not circulated? and the four options will be given as an option to answer.

Current Affairs
The questions will be asked from all the recent stuff which is trending in the news, for example, Panama Papers, Latur Draught, IPL, Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan, iPhone SE, etc. Candidates can do their best if they read (thoroughly) the newspapers and GK books. Also read education magazines like Readers Digest, Competition Success Review etc., this will not only help you in improving your GK but also in improving your verbal ability.

Data interpretation
In this section, the question will be asked from basic maths. Topics like pie charts; data manipulation etc will be covered. The candidates who are going to appear in the entrance test practice Data Interpretation tests available online. There can be logic and puzzle questions. The puzzle questions are similar to the one given in the book "Guide to verbal and non-verbal reasoning" by R.S Agarwal. 

English Language Skills
This section will test basic grammar, vocabulary, proper sentence formation, essay writing, etc. The aspirants should try to command the Basic English grammar by reading Novels and newspaper. The candidates can also be asked to write a short poem on one of the two topics given.

Critical Analysis & Creative Thinking
This section is the most challenging and determinative section of the entire paper. The questions would be asked to test your attitude towards creativity and how far you can go to achieve the best thoughts and apply them to the answers. The candidates should be an intelligent and creative thinker. In this section, the candidates may be asked picture based questions also.

  • How would you tackle the situation of drought in a village which has enough resources but less population?
  • How to describe colour yellow to a blind person?
  • Write a poem on how you feel about giving the test?
  • Data interpretation might have a graph or something from which you have to answer questions asked related to it.

If you are going to appear in the BMM and BMS entrance test, you must prepare according to syllabus and topics. As aspirants should read a newspaper regularly, should be updated with current affairs and general knowledge. Be prepared for quick on-the-spot thinking.
The part which gets/robs you of the most marks is the subjective one where they ask logical/illogical/person opinion question and judge your ability to present answers logically, support your answer (even if silly) with sound reasoning, write quirky answers or find a way to answer riddles.
